It’s been exactly 16 years since France last hosted the Rugby World Cup tournament. Larissa Falls interviewed former 2007 competitor and hard-hitting USA International Back-Rower, Todd Clever, as he takes us down memory lane and looks toward the 2031 Rugby World Cup to be held in the United States.

What are your memories of France hosting the 2007 RWC?

I have fond memories of France hosting the 2007 Rugby World Cup. The entire experience was amazing, starting from the moment we arrived in the country. The hospitality we received was exceptional, and it felt like the entire nation rallied behind every game and every team.

Your favourite moment from the 2007 RWC?

One of my favourite moments from the tournament was when the USA scored against South Africa in what was deemed the try of the tournament. The energy and excitement of the crowd in Montpellier were absolutely electric!

What change- good or bad- have you most noticed about rugby since 2007?

Since 2007, one notable change in rugby has been its increasing popularity and global reach. The sport has grown significantly, attracting more fans and participants worldwide.

How has rugby shaped your life over the past 16 years?

Rugby has shaped my life immensely over the past 16+ years. It has given me incredible opportunities to travel the world, make a career out of playing sport, and [to] forge lifelong friendships and connections. I am forever grateful to the sport and now dedicate my life to giving back to it.

A piece of advice you’d give to players who are going into RWC 2023?

To players going into RWC 2023, my advice would be to soak in every moment. France is a passionate and beautiful country, and experiencing the tournament there will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Embrace the culture, enjoy the matches, and create lasting memories.

How exciting is it to see the USA hosting the RWC in 2031?

The prospect of the USA hosting the Rugby World Cup in both 2031 (Men’s) and 2033 (Women’s) is incredibly exciting for the sport. It presents a great opportunity for rugby to gain popularity in the country, and efforts are already underway to ensure fantastic support for every team competing. It will be a significant milestone for rugby in America, and I am thrilled to see the sport grow and thrive in my home country.
