The Guinness Six Nations clash between Wales vs. Scotland has been called off following fears over the spread of Coronavirus. Robert Rees has the latest from the Principality Stadium.
Guinness Six Nations clash off!
The game between Wales and Scotland has been called off following a board meeting this afternoon in what has been an embarrassing U-turn from the hierarchy involved.
The medical advice hasn’t changed but following most other world sporting events the game has been called off.
It leaves four fixtures in the Six Nations unfinished.
- Ireland vs Italy
- Wales vs Scotland
- France vs Ireland
- Italy vs England
This comes less than five hours after the WRU announced that the game would definitely be going ahead.
The WRU reads;
“We have decided that it is in the best interests of supporters, players and staff to fall in line with recent measures taken across the UK and global sports industries.
“Given the fluid and unprecedented nature of this issue, a postponement became the only viable option.
“Whilst medical advice remains consistent, we have decided that it is in the best interests of supporters, players and staff to fall in line with recent measures taken across the UK and global sports industries.
“The WRU would like to thank all parties for their counsel on the subject and will make further announcements with respect to rescheduling the fixture in the coming days.
Every effort has been made to stage this game and we appreciate that individuals will have been inconvenienced. Given the fluid and unprecedented nature of this issue, a postponement became the only viable option.”
Last Word understands that tickets will be valid for the re-scheduled date or fully refunded.
Rugby fixtures are now limited to the U20s, English Championship, Welsh grass roots and the Premiership Rugby Cup final.
Scottish Rugby Union statement
“All the Scotland players and management team would like to pass on their thanks to the Scotland fans who were aiming to attend the match and share their disappointment this game now will not be played.”
“While it is disappointing the fixture could not go ahead there are clearly wider public safety issues unfolding at this unprecedented time. We support the WRU in the difficult decision they have had to make and will continue to have strong relationship with them going forward,” they added.
Re-schedule date
Last Word also understands that the day of October 31 is being set for the final round of Six Nations fixtures. No news yet though on the Ireland v Italy clash.
