Premiership Rugby salary cap regulations updated

Premiership Rugby has revealed the update of two segments of the salary cap along with a 70 point deduction to Saracens, with immediate effect.

The new changes

There are two basic changes;

  • Teams can now be subjected to a mid-season audit if PRL believes they aren’t compliant with the cap.
  • If they aren’t complying then a new 70 points deduction is available.

Premiership Rugby confirmed on 18 January 2020 that Saracens will be relegated at the end of the 2019-2020 season.

Since then, Premiership Rugby has engaged in dialogue with the RFU. Following this consultation and in order to provide clarity for clubs and supporters, Premiership Rugby confirms that:

  • The Premiership Rugby Salary Cap Regulations have been amended with the unanimous approval of our clubs. The amended Regulations are 4.9d and 14.8 and are available to view here.
  • A further deduction of 70 points has been imposed on Saracens in the current season. This sanction is in addition to the separate deduction of 35 points imposed in November 2019 for breaches of the salary cap in previous seasons.
  • The 70-point deduction ensures that Saracens will end the current season in 12th position.
  • The league table will be updated with effect from today.
