George Russell: “Things have to be right” for Mercedes contract

Just as George Russell said before the summer pause, there were no contract negotiations between himself and Mercedes after the Hungarian GP.

Russell opted against formal discussions over the summer, instead taking time to think about his future.

In theory, the British driver’s partnership with Mercedes is one that should continue in 2026.

Russell has performed at a consistently high level for the Silver Arrows, who invested in his career from a young age.

With that said, there are certain obstacles that have prevented a deal from being reached. It remains to bee seen how easily these can be overcome.

George Russell outlines perspective on Mercedes talks

When McLaren imposed themselves as the dominant force at the start of 2025, there were two drivers who regularly gave them headaches.

The first was Max Verstappen, who managed to win in both Suzuka and Imola to keep some early-season pressure on the papaya team.

Outside of the Dutchman, it was George Russell who was consistently fighting at the front.

Russell was easily one of the strongest performers in the first half of the season, particularly in the opening rounds.

Because of this, it certainly wasn’t in this year’s script for the 27-year-old to still be without a contract for 2026.

Heading into round fifteen of the season, however, this is the position Russell finds himself in.

For several months, his chances of negotiating with Mercedes were delayed by the team’s advances towards Max Verstappen.

With the 4-time Champion’s continuation at Red Bull now decided, Russell wants to bide his time to reach a deal he is satisfied with:

“I definitely wanted to take the summer to really think about my future,” he told the media in Zandvoort.

“Because it’s obviously important for everybody when you’re discussing the coming years.

“The team and Toto were very open to discussing and finding a solution during the break. I just wanted to take that time.

“As you said, there are pros and cons in terms of duration. The truth is I want to win, and I want to win with Mercedes.

“If I could choose, that is what I would choose to do,” Russell explained.

“But of course, things have to be right, have to be aligned.

“There’s a lot more to our job than just driving on a Sunday afternoon…

“I want to make sure it’s done right, and not done quickly.”

The impact of Mercedes’ talks with Verstappen

Ultimately, it is logical for both Russell and Mercedes to sign a new contract.

Russell has established himself as one of the top performers in F1, with his efforts this season putting him in contention for 3rd in the Championship.

Outside of Verstappen, there is nobody Mercedes have shown any real interest in signing at the Briton’s expense.

From Russell’s perspective, signing with the German constructor is a no-brained ahead of the 2026 regulations.

However, as Russell has eluded to on multiple occasions this year, things are not so simple.

Whilst Toto Wolff always signs the 27-year-old’s praises in the media, the fact remains that he pursued Verstappen earlier this year.

He also tried to sign the Dutchman last year, before electing to promote Kimi Antonelli.

Russell will have this in mind when negotiations with Mercedes intensify.

He will understandably want a deal that gives him long-term security, particularly in the context of Verstappen’s repeated links with the team.

Assuming Mercedes are title contenders in 2026, Russell wants to ensure he is at the centre of the team’s future aspirations.

Because of this, how contract talks will evolve over the coming months is unclear.

Whatever direction that take, however, will be instructive about the Brackley team’s future.
