Few would have predicted at the start of 2025 that George Russell’s Mercedes seat would become such a big talking point. The consensus until a few months ago was that the 27-year-old’s position at the Silver Arrows was secure.
However, Mercedes have spent several weeks gauging the availability of Max Verstappen – which has delayed Russell’s own negotiations.
With these developments unfolding in the background, Russell insists his future does not concern him.
Russell unphased amidst speculation about Mercedes future
Most analysts agree that George Russell has been among the top performers this year.
With one victory and five podiums to his name in 2025, the British driver has led the way for Mercedes.

His young teammate, Kimi Antonelli, has certainly shown great promise in his rookie campaign.
Still, the 84-point gap between the two Mercedes drivers is evidence of Russell’s importance to the team.
For many seasons now, the 27-year-old has delivered consistent results for the Brackley-based operation.
Russell also isn’t afraid of going head-to-head with the very best in Formula 1, including Red Bull’s Max Verstappen – who is still linked to a Mercedes seat.
In response to the reports emerging from the paddock, the 4-time winner made his perspective clear in Silverstone:
“Every team has two seats available, and it’s normal that every team is considering what the future holds.
“I don’t take that personally, because I made it clear from the beginning I’m happy to be teammates with anybody.
“Of course there’s lots of conversations,” Russell continued.
“Lots of rumours and all of these are being pointed towards me.
“But from my side feel that isn’t really going to be the case. I want to continue with Mercedes into the future.
“The fact is Toto has never let me down. He’s always given me his word, but he’s also got to do what’s right for his team.
“Which includes me but it also includes thousands of people who work for Mercedes.
“For me it’s nothing to worry about – because I don’t think I’ll be going anywhere, and whoever my team mate will be, it doesn’t concern me either.
“I’m just focused on the driving.”

Decision time approaches for Mercedes
At this stage, there are too many question marks to definitively say how talks between Mercedes and Verstappen will conclude.
Verstappen’s existing Red Bull contract does not expire until 2028. This means that specific exit clauses need to be activated for the Dutchman to leave Milton Keynes beforehand.
Because of this, Russell can have some confidence he will drive at Mercedes in 2026.
However, even if the 4-time Champion stays at Red Bull for next season, things could change again during contract negotiations in twelve months.
When F1’s new pecking order emerges with the 2026 regulations, Verstappen will almost certainly pursue the best seat available.
Should this be Mercedes, it is not inconceivable for the Dutchman to resume negotiations with Toto Wolff.
The 53-year-old’s interest in signing the reigning Champion has been public knowledge for some time.
The fact Russell’s contract still has not been extended shows that Wolff is thoroughly exploring the Dutchman’s availability.
In all likelihood, there are too many obstacles for Verstappen and Mercedes to reach an agreement for next season.
Looking beyond 2026, however, there will remain a lingering question about whether negotiations between the two parties will rekindle.
