The Gen3 era has begun with pre-season tests in Valencia this week. Ranking the new Season 9 Formula E liveries.
For 2023, there will be eleven teams on the Formula E grid. We won’t see the silver of Mercedes or the ROKiT Venturi team, but the arrival of two brand new logos: McLaren and Maserati. Plus ABT Sportline returns to the series after a season off. Before starting Season 9, the teams revealed their new liveries. So we’ve ranked the new designs.

Mahindra was the last team to unveil its new car, making its debut on the first day of testing in Valencia. The main colors of the design will be gold, blue, and the iconic red that represents the team. Chairperson Asha Kharga noted:
“The Gen3 livery takes inspiration from our Born Electric platform design language and marks the latest global colour trend in fashion, with the copper combining with the signature Mahindra red. Elements of the design pay homage to MahindraRacing’sg history and our previous successes, with others demonstrating our vision towards the Gen3 era of Formula E. We are especially excited to bring our cars to India in February to celebrate the inaugural Hyderabad E-Prix.”
2023 will mark a new era not only for Formula E but also for Mahindra, which hired Frederic Bertrand as its new CEO. Long-time Formula E veteran Lucas Di Grassi will race alongside Oliver Rowland.

Avalance Andretti’s livery takes on a red & black color combination. The team has high hopes entering the Gen3 era after a decent 2022 season and now partnering with Porsche for their powertrain. The official lineup for 2023 sees Jake Dennis return and Andre Lotterer replacing last year’s rookie Oliver Askew. Lotterer joins after three seasons with Porsche, and stated his excitement about this new adventure:
“Joining Avalanche Andretti Formula E is an exciting start to an already exciting season of Formula E with the new changes and new racetracks. I’m looking forward to working with the team and Jake to challenge for podiums and wins this season, getting this team back to the front”.

ABT returns to Formula E after sitting out the 2022 season and brings with it the CUPRA brand. CUPRA has a history in rallying and touring cars and this year won its first Extreme E race. The Formula E team, now called ABT-CUPRA, has signed a deal to stay in the championship through 2024. ABT’s CEO Hans-Jurgen Abt, stated during the presentation of their Gen3 car.
“We are looking forward to the new adventure and I am sure we will attract a lot of attention on and off the racetrack.”
The team’s design for Season 9 is based on a black-yellow theme, the colors of CUPRA. Series veteran Robin Frijns and the DTM driver Nico Mueller will partner for Season 9.

McLaren joins Formula E with the name NEOM McLaren Racing. The design of the Gen3 car is very similar to the one used by the British team in Formula 1, the papaya look of the modern-era McLaren. The new team has announced its lineup of Rene Rast – who comes back to the paddock after a season off – and Jake Hughes, a rookie joining from Formula 2. McLaren’s CEO Zak Brown said,
“I believe that this pairing will be crucial in helping us hit the ground running in our first season in the series as the NEOM McLaren Formula E Team.”
7. TAG Heuer Porsche

The Porsche livery was inspired by the brand motto “Driven by Dreams” and is considered a new revolutionary step for electric motorsport. Porsche is ready to start its fourth season in Formula E with Pascal Wehrlein and former World Champion Antonio Felix Da Costa, as they look to fight for podiums and wins. Da Costa comments on the new car and 2023 season with these words:
“We have a common goal, namely to bring Porsche to the top. Porsche is a brand synonymous with victories. We want to deliver those as quickly as possible with the new Porsche 99X Electric Gen3”.

Even if the partnership between DS Automobiles and Techeetah came to an end after the 2022 season, the team will maintain the same design during the new partnership with Penske Autosport. DS Penske launches with a lineup composed of two champions: Stoffel Vandoorne, winner of the 2022 season, and Jean-Eric Vergne, who won the Championship in 2018 and 2019. The focus is on the prize and the whole team expects to fight for the world title. Jay Penske, Owner and Team Principal of the team, says:
“This season is a landmark moment for the Team. A new generation of racing car, a new powertrain, and a historic alliance with a manufacturer we’ve admired for years; we couldn’t be more excited for Season 9!”
5. Jaguar TCS

For Season 9, Jaguar completely changes its design, after years of using a grey background with green or turquoise themes for its liveries. Sam Birds and Mitch Evans return to drive the new black-and-white themed car. Evans could once again fight for the driver’s title, while Birds will race the 2023 season as a “redemption year” after a difficult 2022. The new Jaguar car reflects the revolutionary mentality of the team and looks to make Gen3 a memorable one. James Barclay, Jaguar Team Principal, stated:
“Season 9 is set to be the most competitive and thrilling season to date, with an all-new all-electric race car, the Jaguar I-TYPE 6, iconic cities added to the calendar and our new team design has transformed the car into a work of art, in harmony with our modern luxury vision for Jaguar”.
4. Envision Racing

“This car proves that high performance, efficiency, and sustainability can co-exist without compromise”.
These words underline, once again, the excitement toward Season 9 and the new Formula E era. Trying to make 2023 a memorable year, Envision will partner Nick Cassidy and Sam Bird as its drivers.
3. NIO 333

NIO 333 introduces a revolutionary design for 2023, presenting a colorful new livery. The team’s goal for Season 9 is to reach the podium, with drivers Dan Ticktum and the newly arrived Sergio Sette Camara, from Dragon Penske. The Brazilian joins after a very difficult season in 2022 and hopes to have better luck in the Gen3 car. Russell O’Hagan, Team Principal of NIO, is excited to see the car on track and reveals his expectations for the season:
“If the car goes as well as it looks then we are in for a good year. The signs are positive, but time will tell and we don’t have to wait much longer to find out. I am incredibly proud of what the team has achieved so far.”

Nissan is ready for Season 9, a year of changes for the team. First, they will no longer be named Nissan e.dams instead racing as ‘Nissan Formula E’. The design for next season maintains the usual red theme but the background of the Gen3 car is white, after using black for many years. And it’s a brand new line-up with rookie Sacha Fenestraz partnering with the return of Norman Nato. Ashwani Gupta, Chief Operating Officer, talks about the origins of Nissan and the importance of the logo:
“We have a long history in racing, and we also love to dare to do what others don’t. Our new livery celebrates our Japanese heritage and I’m certain that the design will stand out on the track like never before. I’m really excited for the season to get underway, and I am confident that we have all we need to make the start of the Gen3 era a very successful one for us at Nissan”.
1. Maserati
History meets innovation.
Introducing the Maserati Tipo Folgore. pic.twitter.com/W5lEzG8o33
— Maserati MSG Racing (@maseratimsg) December 6, 2022
The Maserati Tipo Folgore is the first electric racing car created by Maserati. The livery includes the iconic trident and the Italian Tricolore, a symbol of Italy, home of Maserati. On the front wing are two noticeable rainbow stripes, used also where the prior team’s name was, Venturi, as a sign of equality and respect, while the whole car is blue, a historic element of the Italian logo. For seventeen years the Italian logo was missing from motorsports, but in 2023 Maserati enters Formula E with title-contender Edoardo Mortara and Maximilian Gunther. Mortara talked about his new car and hoping to start the season on the right foot.
“Looking at our car, it’s very different compared to the other liveries on the grid for 2023 so we’ll definitely stand out on track in Mexico. Over the past few months, we’ve been going through our development cycle and so far, things look good but it’s too early to really tell. Pre-season testing will be a key opportunity for us to validate our work as we continue to refine and optimise our performance ahead of the start of the season.”
Some cars are more beautiful than others, but of course, the important part comes once they hit the track next month. The new season begins in January at Diriyah.
