2025 Bahrain GP: Sakhir Circuit Gears Up For F3 Action

As the FIA Formula 3 Championship heads to the scorching deserts of Sakhir for Round 2 of the 2025 season, anticipation is sky-high.

What to Expect in Formula 3’s Desert Duel?

The Bahrain International Circuit, a venue with high-stakes drama and wheel-to-wheel action, has delivered some of the most memorable F3 moments in recent years.

With a grid full of hungry rookies and seasoned returnees, the 2025 edition promises to build on that legacy in thrilling fashion.

History of the Bahrain International Circuit

The Bahrain International Circuit made its debut on the Formula 1 calendar in 2004, becoming the first Grand Prix in the Middle East.

Designed by renowned circuit architect Hermann Tilke, the 5.412 km layout features 15 corners and several long straights, making it a unique blend of technical sections and overtaking zones.

Formula 3 first raced in Bahrain in 2020 during the season finale, and since 2022, it has become a regular feature on the calendar, often opening the season. Known for its abrasive asphalt and intense temperature fluctuations, tyre degradation plays a pivotal role here.

The long straights leading into heavy braking zones, particularly Turns 1, 4 and 14, provide excellent overtaking opportunities, while the desert winds can kick up dust and affect grip levels.

Night racing under the floodlights adds another spectacular element to the weekend.

Standout Bahrain F3 Moments

Bahrain has already provided some defining moments in F3 history. In 2022, Franco Colapinto stunned the paddock by taking pole position on debut for Van Amersfoort Racing.

His lap of 1:46.249 was impressive, considering both driver and team were new to the series. It marked the first pole for VAR and showcased the potential of F3 rookies to shake up the order from the get-go.

That same weekend, Arthur Leclerc – Charles Leclerc’s younger brother delivered a masterclass in overtaking during the Feature Race. Starting 13th on the grid, Leclerc carved his way through the field to finish second.

Last season, rookie Arvid Lindblad made headlines with a dream debut, becoming the youngest-ever winner in Formula 3. The Red Bull junior dominated the Sprint Race in commanding fashion.

What to Watch in the 2025 Bahrain F3 Weekend

Coming into the 2025 Bahrain GP, all eyes are on the new wave of young talent aiming to make their mark early in the season. After a dramatic season opener, the pecking order is still taking shape, and Sakhir will offer the first true test of consistency and adaptability.

Will a rookie repeat Colapinto’s or Lindblad’s heroics? Or will the experienced contenders start to assert control?

Tire wear will be a major factor again. With high degradation and the potential for safety cars due to the circuit´s unforgiving runoff areas, drivers will need to balance aggression with conservation.

The slipstream effect on the long straights means qualifying might not tell the full story, as position changes can come thick and fast during the races.

Weather conditions are expected to be dry but blustery, with sand potentially blowing across the track – a notorious Sakhir trademark. Teams will need to fine-tune setups to maintain grip without sacrificing top-end speed.
