Rafael Villagómez completes VAR Line-Up for the 2025 F2 season. The Mexican will drive alongside John Bennett.

VAR Announce the Last Name of Their 2025 F2 Line-Up

As the season opener in Australia draws closer, another name has been confirmed for the new Formula 2 grid.

It is Rafael Villagómez, who will stay with Van Amersfoort Racing for the 2025 F2 season. This will be Villagómez’s second year in Formula 2, and he is ready to step up his game and demonstrate that the lessons he learned last year were valuable.

Beginning of a Career in Motorsport

Villagómez debuted in the F4 British Championship in 2020 with Fortec Motorsport. Despite not participating in every round, he achieved a podium finish in the first race at Donington Park.

The following year, he stepped up to the Formula 3 Championship with HWA Racelab, becoming the first Mexican driver to compete in the series. However, he was unable to score any points and finished the year in 29th place.

In 2021, he began a partnership with Van Amersfoort Racing, competing in the Euroformula Open Championship. This campaign turned out to be the most successful of his career so far, as he achieved five podium finishes, leading VAR to decide to retain him for other championships.

Villagomez’s Journey in Formula 3 and Formula 2 with VAR

The relationship between VAR and Villagómez goes back to 2021. He has since competed with them, although the results were not particularly strong. In 2024, they decided to step up to Formula 2, marking his debut in this new series.

Last year, he partnered with Enzo Fittipaldi before the Brazilian left the grid and was replaced by John Bennett.

In Villagómez’s debut season in Formula 2, the VAR driver managed to earn points on four occasions, achieving a best result of seventh place in the Melbourne Feature Race.

For 2025, as LWOS suggested, VAR and Villagómez have decided to renew their partnership, marking their fifth year together. He will race alongside Bennet, who has already been announced to compete in the full Formula 2 season.

The drivers will take to the track for the first time this year in Barcelona from February 25th to 27th for the pre-season test. They will have three days to readjust to the car and prepare for the first race of the season.
