Adrian Newey reveals chances of working on Aston’s 2025 car

Adrian Newey is undoubtedly an integral part of the Aston Martin project – with the 2026 regulations representing a key moment for the team. Lawrence Stroll’s squad will rely on Newey to produce his usual magic for the next generation of cars.

However, there is also the question of how the British team will perform this season.

After all, numerous senior personnel have indicated Aston Martin cannot simply discard 2025.

Newey breaks down 2026 regulations

For obvious reasons, Aston Martin’s acquisition of Adrian Newey was one of last year’s main developments.

The British engineer is as decorated as anyone, and is particularly effective at finding a cutting edge with new regulations.

In addition to other senior personnel like Andy Cowell and Enrico Cardile, Newey will be a driving force heading into 2026.

However, the 66-year-old cautions that power units could be the difference-makers in twelve months team.

Considering Honda’s partnership with Aston Martin, this is a critical element to consider:

“There has to be a chance that one manufacturer will come out well on top, and it will become a power unit dominated regulation – at least to start with.

“And there’s a chance, if it’s on the combustion engine side, that [advantage] will last through the length of the Formula.

“Because the way the regulations are written, it’s quite difficult for people behind to catch up.

“If it’s on the electrical side, then there’s much more ability to catch up.”

Aston Martin chapter still uncertain

Whilst Lawrence Stroll has successfully assembled some of the brightest minds in F1, there are still obstacles to overcome.

As noted above, Aston Martin need a strong power unit to stand any chance of success in 2026.

In this sense, Honda (whose track record in recent years is excellent) are as important a factor as Adrian Newey.

Additionally, Aston Martin must ensure that Newey can acclimatise to the team as quickly as possible.

The 66-year-old is only allowed to begin work at the factory in March 1st.

Given that 2026 development began on January 1st, Adrian Newey will have to compensate for missed time.

Not only in terms of conceptualising the next generation Aston Martin, but also regarding his integration into the team.

A balancing act for Newey

Because of this, as he explained in an interview, he will have to adapt to the team’s demands:

“My concentration will clearly be on ’26,” he told Auto Motor und Sport.

“No doubt Lawrence [Stroll] will want me to be a little bit involved in the ’25 car.

“Whether I can really contribute anything or not – I’ve got no idea until I start.”

Realistically, the chances of Newey significantly impact Aston’s 2025 package are relatively low.

With F1 teams limited in their wind tunnel hours, the Silverstone factory cannot afford to sacrifice their 2026 project to compensate for the failures of recent seasons.

Still, this does not mean Adrian Newey’s task will be any easier. Considering the number of high-profile figures at Aston, getting up to speed things will be an immense challenge.

At a team with no shortage of resources, Newey must prove he can lead in the right direction.
