Pierre Gasly set to replace Sebastien Buemi for New York ePrix

Red Bull Racing’s Pierre Gasly is set to compete in next month’s New York ePrix for the Renault e.dams team. Gasly will be standing in for reigning Formula E champion Sebastien Buemi, who is unable to compete in the double header event due to commitments to the World Endurance Championship for the Toyota LMP1 team.

Pierre Gasly set to replace Sebastien Buemi for New York ePrix

Gasly currently competes in the Super Formula series and is the reigning GP2 Champion, winning the highly rated series in 2016 for Prema Racing. Racing for Renault e.dams in New York would mark a reunion between their relations, with the French driver previously racing for DAMS in GP2 in 2015.

The New York ePrix will mark the ninth and tenth rounds of the 2016-2017 Season, and as it stands, Buemi has a 32 point lead in the Drivers’ Championship over Lucas Di Grassi while Renault e.dams have a 58 point lead over Abt Schaeffler Audi Sport in the Constructors’ Championship. As Buemi is not racing and with 58 points on offer in the double header event, the Swiss driver could easily see his current championship lead disappear, with it being likely that Di Grassi will perform well at the circuit having finished on the podium six times in the first eight races of the current season. As Buemi is not competing, it is without doubt that the championship battle will boil down to the final race of the season which will be another double header event, this time in Montreal, Canada.

It is believed that Gasly has been given the all clear to compete in New York by Red Bull Racing, despite being due to attend the British Grand Prix which clashes with the second race of the New York ePrix, allowing to drive for Renault e.dams alongside Nico Prost.
