Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton Sanctions Update Could Come Soon

There are indications that updates could be coming soon regarding Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton’s sanctions from the DP World Tour. The DP World Tour continues to impose fines and suspensions on the two golfers, now playing on LIV Golf, but the Tour may resolve the matter as the 2025 season draws to a close.

How Rahm and Hatton Landed in DP World Tour “Trouble”

Rahm and Hatton joined Saudi-backed LIV Golf without obtaining “conflicting event” releases from the DP World Tour (formerly the European Tour). Under the Tour’s regulations, this was a breach, and it triggered automatic penalties. An independent arbitration panel upheld those sanctions in April 2023, ruling that the DP World Tour was justified in imposing fines (sometimes up to £100,000) and suspensions.

The pair have both formally appealed their fines. Rahm has made it clear he does not intend to pay the fines if the appeal fails. He has also expressed a wish to delay the appeal’s resolution until after the 2025 Ryder Cup, arguing that resolving it beforehand could complicate matters. Kinnings himself has acknowledged that the appeal may not conclude before the Ryder Cup.

Notwithstanding, they both retain membership on the DP World Tour while the appeal is ongoing, but they must play a minimum of four regular Tour events per season (excluding majors) to remain eligible for Ryder Cup selection. However, the DP World Tour automatically applies the suspensions to the next event for which a player is eligible, even if the player never intended to enter. That means serving a ban does not necessarily require participation, but the penalty still applies.

Possible Update Impending For LIV Golf Pair

The DP World Tour recently announced new deals, including a naming rights extension and a renewed partnership with Sky Sports. As the season draws to a close, there is increased pressure to resolve open legal and disciplinary matters.

Interestingly, European Tour Group Chief Executive Guy Kinnings did not publicly mention their pending sanctions during recent media appearances on Sky Sports Golf while discussing the future of the DP World Tour. He focused on the new deal with Sky Sports and the DP World naming rights extension, but his silence on the pending sanctions could indicate internal confidence that a decision is near.

If the appeal is rejected, Rahm and Hatton will have to pay their fines. Suspensions could also force them to miss some DP World Tour events. Observers have speculated that the DP World Tour and the players might reach a negotiated agreement or implement procedural changes. However, Kinnings has repeatedly stated that existing rules will apply.
