The WSU Cougars sent three players to the 2022 NFL Combine. Running back Max Borghi, offensive tackle Abe Lucas and defensive back Jaylen Watson all participated in drills over the course of three days.
Abraham Lucas
A mainstay on the WSU offensive line, Lucas put up impressive numbers at this year’s NFL Combine. He ran a 4.92-second 40-yard dash, good enough for sixth among offensive linemen. He also completed 24 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press. This tied for 12th in his positional group.
Lucas excelled on the other two drills that focus on quickness, the 20-yard shuttle, and the three-cone drill. He completed the 20-yard shuttle in 4.40 seconds. This mark set him alone at the top of the offensive linemen leaderboard. On the three-cone drill, Lucas posted an equally impressive 7.25 seconds. This drill saw Lucas at the top of the board once again, tying with Northern Iowa’s Trevor Penning for first.
The jumping drills challenged the Everett, Wash. native more. In the vertical jump, Lucas recorded a height of 27 inches. This tied for 26th among the group. In the broad jump, Lucas leaped to 8 feet 11 inches. This tied for 25th among the offensive linemen.
NFL.com gives Lucas a 6.15 out of 8.0 grade as a prospect. This projects him as a “good backup with the potential to develop into a starter.”
Lucas came in with the measurements of six-feet-six-inches tall and weighed 315 pounds. At WSU, he was listed as six-foot-seven and 319 pounds. His hands measured 10.5 inches and his arms were 33 7/8 inches.
Max Borghi
Along with the offensive line, running backs worked out on Friday. However, the WSU star Borghi did not run any on-field drills as he tweaked his ankle in the senior bowl. He is expected to work out at WSU’s Pro Day.
Borghi did run one off-field drill, showing off his strength with the bench press. Only six runnings backs participated in this event, with Borghi finishing fifth. He completed 20 reps of 225 pounds.
NFL.com grades Borghi with a 5.60 out of a possible 8.0 rating. This would put Borghi as a “candidate for the bottom of roster or practice squad.”
For his measurements, Borghi came in at five-foot-nine and 210 pounds. WSU had listed Borghi as five-foot-ten and 205 pounds. His hands were 9 1/8 inches and his arms were 29 5/8 inches.
Jaylen Watson
Jaylen Watson did not have the same sort of day that Lucas had on Friday. His Sunday performance highlighted his strength instead of his speed.
Watson finished on top of the cornerbacks for the bench press, completing 18 reps of 225 pounds. Only five corners chose to participate in the bench press this year.
The only other drill Watson competed in was the 40-yard dash. He ran a respectable 4.51, but it becomes a little overshadowed when Baylor’s Kalon Barnes and UTSA’s Tariq Woolen run sub-4.30 times. Overall, Watson finished tied for 21st among corners in the 40-yard dash.
NFL.com gives Watson a grade of 5.63. Similar to Borghi, this would make Watson a “candidate for the bottom of roster or practice squad.”
The Georgia native came in at six-foot-two and 197 pounds. WSU had him listed as six-foot-three and 204 pounds. Watson’s hands came in at 9 5/8 inches. His arms were 32 1/4 inches.
