Top Five Aggies In 2021

Top Aggies

The Texas A&M Aggies enter the 2021 college football season after losing their starting quarterback: Kellen Mond. A&M will require high production from its best players to compete for their first SEC Championship. Check out the top five players for the Aggies in 2021.

Texas A&M’s Top 5 Players

5. QB Haynes King

Haynes King comes in at the fifth spot because of his high potential and the importance of the quarterback position. King is the projected starter at quarterback over Zach Calzada for the Aggies in 2021. King is a dual-threat quarterback who can keep opposing defenses on their heels. Moreover, a running threat at quarterback can lead to more production in the running game from Isaiah Spiller and Ainias Smith. King must also become a proficient passer, and he has to improve his decision-making by avoiding unforced errors like in the spring game. Over the season, he has the potential to improve his draft stock by performing at a high level against the SEC West.

4. RB Isaiah Spiller

Isaiah Spiller is the expected starter at running back for the Aggies this year. Last season, he finished with more than 1,000 rushing yards and recorded nine touchdowns. He earned All-SEC First Team honors, and he was a Doak Walker Award semifinalist. Spiller will most likely split carries with Ainias Smith, and Spiller can also be used as a threat in the passing game. Additionally, Spiller is a Heisman sleeper for this season, and he will have to post big numbers against Alabama and LSU for A&M to win the SEC. Spiller is ranked 46th in PFF’s 2022 NFL Draft prospect rankings.

3. OT Kenyon Green

Kenyon Green is a junior who was recently named to the Walter Camp and Athlon Sports Preseason All-America First Teams. Last year, Green was a part of the All-SEC second team, and he was also included in the All-America first team by several media sources. He’s the anchor of the offensive line unit, and he’s ranked 17th in NFL draft prospect rankings. Moreover, Green is one of the most physically gifted linemen to ever play for the Aggies. This season, his shift to left tackle will allow him to display his unique athleticism.

2. DE DeMarvin Leal

Like Kenyon Green, DeMarvin Leal was similarly named to the Preseason All-America First Teams. Leal finished with 37 tackles last season, and he led the defense with eight hurries. Furthermore, Leal earned the honors of team defensive MVP last year as well as spring defensive MVP. He is ranked fifth in the draft prospect rankings, but there is still time for him to improve his stock. In fact, he could prove to be the best defensive player in the FBS this season.

1. TE Jalen Wydermyer

Jalen Wydermyer is another junior who was the best player on the Aggies even last season. He is a freak athlete standing at 6-5 and 255 pounds. Wydermyer ended last season with nearly 50 receptions and more than 500 receiving yards. This season, he has the potential to have a year similar to that of Kyle Pitts at Florida last year. Wydermyer was named to the Preseason All-America Second Teams due to him being a John Mackey award finalist in 2020. As one of the best blocking tight ends, Wydermyer is able to take the field in both running and passing situations; he is the 47th ranked prospect for next year’s draft.

Concluding Thoughts

For Texas A&M to compete in the SEC, it will require efficient production from its top five players this season. While not all of these players are first round draft prospects, they each present a valuable skill and talent for the Aggies. Coaching and development of these players over the year can lead the Aggies to their first playoff appearance.
