79 Days Away From College Football Kickoff

Impressive Dawg

Matt Stinchcomb, who graduated with a 3.96 GPA, built an impressive athletic and academic record that made him one of Georgia’s most decorated players on and off the field. When he was inducted in the College Football Hall of Fame 2018, he became the third HOF member to also win the Campbell Trophy.

Stinchcomb earned First-Team All-America honors twice for his performance on the field, including a consensus selection in 1998. He also stood out in the classroom, earning Academic All-America honors twice and being named Academic All-American of the Year in 1998.

Stinchcomb was a four-year letterman, a three-year starter, and team captain. He helped lead Georgia to a 19-5 record in his junior and senior years, including wins in the Outback and Peach Bowls. He started 32 straight games for the Bulldogs, was a finalist for the Rotary Lombardi Award in 1998, and won the Jacobs Award as the SEC’s top blocker.

Stinchcomb was named to the SEC All-Decade Team for the 1990s and recognized as an SEC Legend in 2009. His strong academic record and community work earned him several honors, such as an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, the NCAA Top Eight Award, and two selections to the AFCA National Good Works Team.

After graduating magna cum laude with a business degree, Stinchcomb was picked 18th overall by the Oakland Raiders in the 1999 NFL Draft. The Lilburn, Georgia native played five seasons with the Raiders and three more with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

After his NFL career, Stinchcomb teamed up with his brother Jon and former teammate David Greene, both NFF National Scholar-Athletes from Georgia, to start the Stinchcomb Family Foundation and Countdown to Kickoff Charities. These organizations raise money for children’s healthcare.

Stinchcomb also completed Harvard Business School’s Executive Education Business Management & Entrepreneurial Program. He is now a partner at Sterling Seacrest Partners, a commercial insurance brokerage and consulting firm. During college football season, he works as a game analyst on the SEC Network.

Another Great # 79 Rich Glover, Nebraska

Rich Glover was known as one of the best defensive players of his era. His coach, Bob Devaney, called him “the greatest defensive player I ever saw.” Glover grew up in Jersey City, New Jersey, stood 6 feet 1 inch tall,
weighed 234 pounds, and played middle guard from 1970 to 1972. During his first two years, Nebraska won the national championship, and in his senior year, the team finished fourth in the country.  Nebraska played in the Orange Bowl each of those three years, winning every time with victories over Louisiana State (17-12), Alabama (38-0), and Notre Dame (40-6).
Over Glover’s three seasons, Nebraska had a record of 34 wins, 1 loss, and 2 ties. He was named All-American in 1971 and 1972, earning unanimous honors the second time. He was chosen as Lineman of the Year by the Washington Gridiron Club in 1971 and by the Walter Camp Foundation in 1972. In 1971, Glover received the Chevrolet-ABC Awards for his outstanding line play in the games against Colorado and Oklahoma. In his last two seasons, he also won the Outstanding Lineman Award in the Orange Bowl.
Two of the most respected national awards for linemen are the Outland and the Lombardi, and Glover won both in 1972. That same year, his photo appeared on the cover of the NCAA Football Guide, which was a special honor. At Nebraska, he received the Tom Novak Award for “courage and determination” and the Guy Chamberlin Award for “contributions to Nebraska football.” After college, Glover played two seasons with the Giants and Eagles, but an injury ended his football career. He earned a degree in education and went on to work as a teacher and coach in the San Jose, California, school system.
