Jordan Marshall Ready for Bigger Role at Michigan

The Michigan one-two punch at running back has been one of the strongest tandems in college football this season. But with Justice Haynes once again battling an injury, Wolverines’ fans are seeing the young running back Jordan Marshall prepare to shoulder a heavier load heading into Week 10.

Jordan Marshall’s Rise Strengthens Michigan Football Backfield

Haynes was spectacular in Michigan’s 31–20 win over Michigan State, rushing for 152 yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries. Yet, after taking a hit in the second half, the Alabama transfer appeared to re-aggravate the rib and abdominal injury that had already sidelined him for six quarters earlier this month.

Marshall took over for Haynes during his absence and performed his duties without any issues. The Sophomore played against Washington on October 18, running 25 times for 133 yards and scoring one touchdown, which demonstrated that Michigan has more depth in its running back position than fans understand. He followed that effort with 110 yards and a score in the rivalry win over the Spartans, giving the Wolverines two 100-yard rushers in the same game for the first time this season. The performance showed Marshall had become more important for Michigan football depth at the backfield position throughout this season.

Sherrone Moore Keeps Michigan Football Updates Tight

Head coach Sherrone Moore didn’t offer much clarity on Haynes’ status during his weekly radio show, only saying, “Yeah, we’ll see. We’ll see what he looks like as he goes through the week.”

Michigan’s upcoming matchup with 2–6 Purdue doesn’t appear to demand that Haynes play if he’s not at full strength. With a bye week following, resting him could allow for a full recovery before November’s Big Ten push.

Marshall should take the lead as back because he proves his worth through steady performance and produces high rushing statistics. The dependable second option behind Haynes for Michigan football will continue to benefit, given Jordan Marshall’s ongoing production.

Marshall’s Confidence and Moore’s Trust

During his Monday press conference, Moore praised Marshall’s growth and confirmed that the second-year back will continue to see more carries.

Moore replied with complete agreement when asked about his response. Jordan would go to 95 percent of the schools in the country and be the starter. He’s an outstanding running back. He possesses the ability to either make you miss or run you over or catch the long pass for a touchdown.

Marshall succeeds in short-yardage plays because he combines his ability to see the field with his balanced playing style and his strong power abilities. He performs Haynes’s spelling while adding his own musical elements to the performance. The Wolverines have established a thunder and lightning offensive system, according to Moore. Haynes provides the explosive, one-cut speed, while Marshall punishes defenders between the tackles and wears down defenses.

Moore’s praise reflects how much confidence the staff has in Marshall and how Michigan football relies on him for consistency and toughness.

Balancing Thunder and Lightning

The offense of Michigan under Moore will develop into a key strength because of its ability to distribute playing time between two running backs during the final part of the season. The Wolverines employ both strategies to manage game speed while keeping possession of the ball, which reduces stress on freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood and enables the offensive line to excel in the trenches.

Marshall will continue playing in the game no matter what Haynes decides about playing against Purdue. His production has shown he can handle the workload, and his self-assurance keeps increasing with each passing week.

Looking Ahead

No. 21 Michigan hosts Purdue at 7:30 p.m. EST Saturday at Michigan Stadium, where fans will get their latest look at how Moore plans to manage one of the deepest backfields in the country.

A strong performance from Marshall would indicate that the ground game leadership has shifted to him, at least for the time being.
