In a year of outstanding quarterback play, Miami’s Cam Ward was chosen as the best by the committee for the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award. The senior transfer is the third Hurricane to hoist the nation’s oldest and most prestigious quarterback trophy. He joins Vinny Testaverde (1986) and Gino Torretta (1992) as winners from Miami.

Ward was top five in the country in nearly every passing and offensive category. Ward completed 293 of 435 pass attempts for 4,123 yards and 36 touchdowns with seven interceptions. He also has 196 rushing yards with four touchdowns while steering the Hurricanes to a 10-2 with an offense that ranks first among all FBS programs in scoring offense (44.2) and total offense (538.3).

Ward leads the nation in passing touchdowns with 36 and a quarterback rating of 88.0. He is second in the country in passing yards with 4,123 and total offense per game with a 359.9 average.

Ward threw for more than 300 yards in 10 games this season. He had 400+  yards passing in three of those games. He also had three touchdowns (passing or rushing) in nine of the 12 games.

Ward’s Accolades

Ward has already been named the ACC Player of the Year and the conference’s Offensive Player of the Year. He was first team quarterback in the all-conference voting. He is also a finalist for the Heisman Trophy that will be announced Saturday night.

Ward was selected as a Davey O’Brien Great 8 choice five times. The weekly honor tracks the best quarterback performances each week.

Dillon Gabriel of Oregon and Shedeur Sanders of Colorado were the other finalists for the Davey O’Brien Award.

The finalist ballot is a weighted vote with the players being ranked in order. The voting committee is made up of former winners and college football broadcasters and writers from across the country.

Ward will be honored at a dinner at the Forth Worth Club in Texas in February.
