College football free agency is now in full swing, as the transfer portal has been open for a few days. A litany of quarterbacks across the country have jumped into the portal in search of their next destination with hopes of finding brighter pastures. The Cincinnati Bearcats were certainly in the discussion for a lot of these signal-callers, with Emory Jones expiring his eligibility after this season. Just days after the transfer window opened up, Cincinnati landed a commitment from Indiana transfer quarterback Brendan Sorsby.
Sorsby’s Path
Sorsby is a Denton, Texas, native and attended Lake Dallas High School, where he stood out for his quarterback play. So much so that he was tagged as the 13th-best dual-threat quarterback in the country by ESPN in the 2022 class.
The 6-3, 230-pounder went to play for Indiana and redshirted his first year before splitting time this season. He and Tayven Jackson alternated throughout the year. However, Sorsby was statistically the leading quarterback for the Hoosiers with 1,587 yards, 15 touchdowns, and five interceptions passing. He also ran it 112 times for 286 yards and four scores.
Fit for Cincinnati
Cincinnati head coach Scott Satterfield wasted no time getting things in order within his roster after the disappointing season ended. Many players elected to transfer away from Cincinnati, which undoubtedly caused a hit to the roster. However, not long after the announcements of many exiting players came some confidence-inducing returning announcements.
Kiner And The O-Line Return
Corey Kiner, the featured workhorse running back and Cincinnati native, made known his intentions to return in 2024. Kiner was undoubtedly the team’s offensive MVP this year, and his presence is crucial to the offense. In a similar exciting fashion, the entire offensive line announced that they will be back in red and black next season. Keeping these six guys is a massive success for the Bearcats. Just about every player that led a borderline top-five rushing attack in 2023 will be back in 2024.
You have to assume that this bona fide rushing attack coming back was very intriguing for all transfer quarterbacks who were considering Cincinnati. Plus, Sorsby is a legit dual-threat player himself who will get plenty of extra yards on the ground with his athleticism and big frame. We saw this season that Satterfield-led offenses are committed to the run game. Cincinnati really is a good fit for dual-threat quarterbacks looking for a new start. If Sorsby can be a consistent passer and if Cincinnati can keep some important weapons at wide receiver, this could be a fun fit.
Sorsby will join current rostered guys Brady Lichtenberg and Brady Drogosh in a quarterback battle next year. Sorsby has by far the most experience at quarterback. Having played in the Big 10 and will likely have a leg up.
