UCLA Gets 4-Star Heavyweight Damian Sellers

UCLA got a midday shot in the arm with the signing of 4-star linebacker Damian Sellers from Scottsdale, Arizona.

Sellers is a four-star recruit on the 247Sports Composite as well as on the 247Sports stand alone rankings. He had 19 offers, including some from the elites of college football like LSU, Oklahoma, Alabama, Auburn, Penn State, and Florida, as well as several Pac 12 schools including USC. He cancelled trips to LSU and Oregon after visiting Westwood.

UCLA Signs Damian Sellers

Sellers had 65 tackles in his senior year at Saguro High School in Scottsdale. He had 32.5 tackles for loss and eight-and-a-half sacks worth a loss of 74 yards. He also had one fumble recovery.

His high school coach, Kyle Caldwell, took to twitter to rave about his star player.

The signing is significant in that linebacker is a position of significant development need for UCLA. They are losing all of their 2019 starting linebackers. In addition, Tyree Thompson and Je’Vari Anderson who were both experienced, but missed much or all of this season with injuries will not be returning for 2020. That leaves Shea Pitts and Leni Toailoa as the only returnees with significant playing time. Carl Jones and Bo Calvert will be counted on. But development of the linebackers that UCLA signs this week will be significant in 2020.

Saguro is one the top schools year in and year out in Arizona, so this was a big hit for UCLA assistant Paul Rhodes. Sellers has size, speed, and agility that is already developed at an elite level.
