The new early signing period in college football has taken some of the drama from February, but there were still teams and players anxiously awaiting yesterday. For Coach Will Muschamp, the Gamecocks’ class was almost full in December. They had 19 players sign during the early signing period and were left with only four spots for 2019.
Gamecocks’ Class Fills Four Remaining Spots
Just Waiting
Two of the players looking to fill those remaining spots had committed in the last month so there was little drama in their decisions. Defensive back Shilo Sanders, son of NFL Hall of Famer Deon, and offensive lineman William Rogers were committed and just waiting on today to sign. Sanders was an Under Armor All-American as a senior. He had five interceptions while helping lead his team to a state championship. Rogers was an under the radar prospect, but he camped at South Carolina last summer and the coaches liked what they saw. Each player signed their letter of intent yesterday. Depth in the secondary and along the offensive line is always important. Sanders and Rogers will add to the Gamecocks’ class at both those positions.
Decision Day
There were two players who had South Carolina coaches and fans crossing their fingers. Four-star defensive lineman Jaquaze Sorrells and safety Jammie Robinson saved their commitments for today. Both made their pledge to be part of the 2019 Gamecocks class during ceremonies at their high schools. Each of these players has the ability and potential to contribute early in their careers.
Sorrells chose the Gamecocks over Penn State and Alabama. He was also an Under Armor All-American, joining Sanders and previously signed five-star Zacch Pickens at the game. He will add depth and size along the defensive front. The Florida native will join a highly touted group along the defensive line in the Gamecocks’ class.
Robinson selected the Gamecocks over fellow SEC East members Tennessee, Missouri, and Kentucky. He is a hard-hitting safety that has also shown solid coverage skills. South Carolina’s secondary was decimated by injuries last season, so adding depth in this class was a priority. The Gamecocks have also been missing a tone-setter at safety. Robinson could fill the need for a physical presence on the back end of the defense.
