Aryna Sabalenka vs Nick Kyrgios ‘Battle of the Sexes’: How to Watch, Format, Start Time and Full Match Details

In one of the most controversial and talked-about tennis exhibitions of the year, Nick Kyrgios is set to take on current world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in a match dubbed this generation’s “Battle of the Sexes,” following multiple exhibitions played between male and female professional players in the past.

Although this match undoubtedly lacks both the historical weight and legacy implications of its predecessors, whenever such unique spectacles take place, people take notice. Here is a complete background and guide heading into the match.

How the Match Came Together

The idea of such a match was first floated by Nick Kyrgios, a former top-20 player on the ATP Tour better known for his on-court theatrics and comments than his play, who said he could beat the best women’s player in the world despite having been sidelined for almost 3 years. Since the start of 2023, Kyrgios has played just six matches on the ATP Tour, winning only one.

Sabalenka, the No. 1–ranked women’s player for the past two seasons, was quick to respond. With both players represented by the same agency, Evolve, the exhibition was scheduled for late 2025 during the off-season.

Venue and Playing Conditions

The match will be played at the Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai, a venue capable of hosting more than 15,000 spectators.

Like most exhibitions, the contest will be played on an indoor hard court.

Match Format and Special Rules

Due to the uniqueness of the matchup, several special rules have been implemented to keep the contest as competitive as possible. The match will be played in a best-of-three-sets format. If the match is tied at one set apiece, the deciding set will be a 10-point match tiebreak rather than a conventional third set.

Two additional rules have also been introduced:

  1. Each player will be allowed only one serve per point, minimizing the advantage of serve dominance.
  2. Sabalenka’s side of the court will be nine percent smaller than Kyrgios’s side.

Date, Time, and Broadcast Information

The match will take place on Sunday, December 28. It is scheduled to begin at 7:45 PM local time in Dubai, which corresponds to 10:45 AM in New York and 3:45 PM in London.

The exhibition will be broadcast across major tennis networks, including Tennis Channel in the United States, the BBC in the United Kingdom, and Stan Sport in Australia.

What’s at Stake

With little competitive tennis taking place during the off-season and significant controversy surrounding the event, both participants will be eager to make a statement in Dubai, as it is expected to be viewed by a large audience.

And while this exhibition may lack the historical significance of similar matches from the past, for better or worse, it is still set to go down as a moment that will be talked about long after the final point is played.

About Zain Mustafa

Being brought up in a sports-watching home, some of the spheres flying across the TV screen stuck with me more than others, the yellow fuzzy one probably the most. A lefty Mallorcan got me into it, a righty Murcian has kept me in it after him, but to be honest, once I was in, I never felt like leaving anyway.
