Swiss Open Gstaad: Five Players Withdraw From Event

Next week’s 2025 Swiss Open in Gstaad will be played simultaneously with the Swedish Open in Bastad and the Mifel Tennis Open in Los Cabos. Two-time French Open runner-up Casper Ruud and Alexander Bublik are among those on the Swiss Open entry list. Unfortunately, five players also withdrew, including three Grand Slam finalists.

Which Players Have Withdrawn?

Alexander Zverev was the highest-ranked player to withdraw from the Swiss Open. The world No. 3 said he could not play at the event for personal reasons. Although it is impossible to know anymore without confirmation from Zverev or someone close to him, Zverev gave an emotional press conference after losing in the Wimbledon opening round, where he talked about his mental struggles. He might be taking some time off because of those issues.

Matteo Berrettini was the second man to withdraw from the Swiss Open. The 2021 Wimbledon runner-up missed the French Open with a right oblique injury. He returned at this year’s Wimbledon, but tournament organizers confirmed he would miss the event because of an injury. That is likely a recurrence of the same problem.

Marin Cilic, the 2014 US Open champion, is the sole Grand Slam winner who withdrew. He had an impressive run at Wimbledon, losing to Flavio Cobolli in the fourth round. At 36 and after injury issues in recent years, Cilic may want some additional recovery time after his efforts in London.

Otto Virtanen and Daniel Elahi Galan were the other two players who removed themselves from the Swiss Open entry list. Virtanen has not competed since missing his round of 16 match at the Libema Open a month ago, while Galan was in action at the start of this month at a Challenger Tour event in Modena.

Who Replaces Those Players on the Entry List?

Three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka benefits from Zverev’s decision to withdraw from the Swiss Open. He entered as an emergency substitution, and his inclusion should boost ticket sales. Despite being 40 and ranked outside the Top 100, Wawrinka’s desire to compete remains. The tennis legend’s last ATP final was at the Croatia Open in Umag, one of the other post-Wimbledon clay-court tournaments.

Arthur Cazaux replaced Matteo Berrettini. The 22-year-old Frenchman is inconsistent, but also dangerous when his game clicks. He showed that at the 2024 Australian Open, reaching the fourth round. Dalibor Svrcina took Cilic’s place at the Swiss Open. The Czech reached a career-high ranking of No. 113 last month. Nikoloz Basilashvilli and Roman Andres Burruchaga were the other two players to move into the entry list.
