Electronic Line Calls to Kill the Traditionality of Wimbledon

Wimbledon has kept itself different from every other Grand Slam with different rules and nomenclature. The fact that men’s tennis is called gentlemen’s tennis just elevates the class of the event. Every athlete has to don white clothes to maintain the purity of the event. These differences make Wimbledon a tournament that is very close to everyone’s heart.

Wimbledon to introduce Electronic line calls

The 148-year-old traditions of the event however will go through a slight change this time around. Wimbledon will follow the path that the Australian Open and US Open have taken up when it comes to “line umpires.” The tournament Down Under and in the Flushing Meadows have replaced line judges with electronic line calls.

What that has done is taken out the challenges the players can take to challenge line calls. Wimbledon, too, from the 2025 edition will not be following the traditional line judges’ call, and will shift to electronic line calls. With this development, the French Open remains the only Grand Slam with the line judges still making the line calls.

It is a disappointing move as it takes away a very integral decision-making section away from the sport. The very fact that the players have to be alert enough to change a wrong call is something that has kept the crowd engaged for all these years. Without a doubt, there is a certain increase in accuracy of the judgements with electronic line calls. However, the pleasure of a human correcting a human error and earning a point through sheer alertness has been robbed of the sport.

Traditional fans would only hope for the tournament organizers of these established Grand Slams to understand the excitement and interest the challenges had kept alive all these years.
