Dan Evans Chides Players who have Schedule Concerns

British tennis player Dan Evans has weighed in on the ongoing debate surrounding the demanding nature of the professional tennis calendar, urging his fellow players to show perspective and acknowledge the privileges of their profession.

Speaking before his match at Queen’s Club, Evans was candid about his views, suggesting that players should be more mindful when complaining about their workload.

“I think first and foremost, we’re in a fortunate position,” Evans said. “When I hear about the schedule, these guys don’t have to play every week. You are allowed to not play.”

The World No. 59 noted that many players opt to participate in extra tournaments to secure end-of-year financial bonuses, rather than because they are forced to.

“The reason they play is so they pick up their bonus pool at the end of the year,” he explained.

After the remarks, the British tennis veteran delivered more than just a stunning 7-5 6-2 upset over World No. 13 Frances Tiafoe at the 2025 Queen’s Club Championships to grab his first win against a Top 20 player since 2023.

While acknowledging that the Tour’s demands can be intense, Evans stressed the importance of keeping things in perspective.

“We’ve got to be careful moaning about how we have a lot of work, which is good,” he added. “There are other people in the world who are struggling for work.”

He pointed out that professional tennis players operate as independent contractors and ultimately control their schedules.

“We are allowed to take weeks off. We are independent contractors. We can take the week off.” he emphasised.

Evans’ Queen’s performance seemed to prove his point. Despite a challenging year and a slip on these same courts in 2024 that jeopardised his season, he seized the moment as a wild card to grab his first win at the tournament since 2021.
