The 2025 WTA Berlin Open will kick off on Monday, Jun 16. It is a WTA 500 event that serves as a preparatory tournament for Wimbledon.
Nine of the world’s Top 10 players have signed to play. That means Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff could potentially meet in a French Open final rematch. The pair will lead the two halves of the draw. Jessica Pegula is the defending champion. She won her first grass-court title last summer after saving five match points in the final.
The only Top 10 member who won’t make the trip to the German capital is Iga Swiatek. Four players will enter the main draw as wild cards, and the tournament has named three of them. Who are they?
Three Players Receive Berlin Open Wild Cards
The first wild card is former US Open champion Emma Raducanu. The 22-year-old is currently competing at the inaugural WTA 500 at Queen’s and will travel to Berlin once her campaign in London is over. Raducanu has never played in Berlin in the past.
The second wild card entrant is four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka. The Japanese star won her first clay-court title last month (Saint-Malo) and will look to follow suit by winning her first professional title on grass. Osaka has a 21-17 lifetime record on the lawns and missed this swing for five years after 2019 (she returned to play on grass last season). She lost in the first round of the Berlin Open 12 months ago.
The third wild card has gone to home player Eva Lys. The 23-year-old lost in qualifying in her only previous appearance in Berlin three years ago. Lys has won five grass-court matches in her career, with the most notable of them being her winner-take-all qualifying victory over Amanda Anisimova at the 2024 Wimbledon.
Two-time former runner-up Belinda Bencic will use a special ranking to access the main draw. The Tokyo Gold Medalist missed the French Open due to injury and will play for the first time since Rome.
