Alexander Bublik secured one of the most impressive victories of his career on Thursday at the French Open. He dramatically recovered from losing the first two sets to overcome last year’s quarterfinalist Alex de Minaur 2-6 2-6 6-4 6-3 6-2. The Kazakhstani has developed a reputation as one of the sport’s most entertaining and unpredictable players. That was shown with an incredible tweener, which he hit during one of the most critical points of the match.
Alexander Bublik Hits Outrageous Tweener On Set Point
Bublik served at 5-3 40-15 in the fourth set. He hit a serve out wide that de Minaur met with an impressive deep reply near the centre of the court. Most players would have scrambled backwards to try and respond with a forehand from that position. Instead, Bublik chose to hit a tweener. The probability of that shot selection working off a good return is improbable.
Incredibly, Bublik’s tweener landed just over the net, leaving de Minaur scrambling to retrieve it. The speedy Australian managed to make his opponent hit a passing shot, but Bublik made no mistake, finishing the point with a backhand down the line. He deservedly soaked up the rapturous applause from the fans afterward, holding his arms out to the side.
Even Bublik’s team in the stands looked astounded by his shot selection. Few others would consider playing that shot, and even fewer would have the ability to make it. That unpredictable style helped him throw de Minaur off his game. and seal victory in five sets. De Minaur had made the quarterfinals at four consecutive Grand Slams before losing to Bublik.
