Rome’s Foro Italico Expands for Historic Italian Open 2025

The Italian Open, one of the most prestigious tournaments on the ATP and WTA circuits, is set for a major transformation in 2025. Hosted at the iconic Foro Italico in Rome, the tournament will see a significant expansion, accommodating its growing popularity and increasing attendance numbers. The next edition, scheduled from May 5 to May 18, has unveiled these exciting changes in order to ensuring a better experience for players and fans alike.

The 2025 tournament will also mark the highly anticipated return of local hero Jannik Sinner. The Italian star, who has been serving a three-month doping ban, will be eligible to compete just in time for his homecoming at the Foro Italico. To celebrate his return, the organizers have announced ambitious expansion plans that will enhance the tournament’s infrastructure and overall appeal.

The New SuperTennis Arena and Additional Courts

One of the biggest highlights of this expansion is the introduction of a fourth show court, adding to the existing Central Court, the Grand Stand Arena, and the unique “Pietrangeli” court, famous for its surrounding statues. The new venue, named SuperTennis Arena, will be located within the Stadio dei Marmi, a historic facility named after Italian track legend Pietro Mennea. The arena will have a seating capacity of up to 3,000 spectators, offering an additional top-tier venue for high-profile matches.

Moreover, the expansion will include two additional courts within the Stadio dei Marmi, each equipped with stands for 800 spectators. This will bring the total number of match courts to nine, alongside twelve dedicated training courts. These developments aim to address the increasing demand for seats, as the tournament has consistently broken attendance records in recent years.

A Revamped Experience for Fans

Beyond the addition of new courts, the Italian Open is also enhancing the fan experience. For the first time, spectators will be able to enter the facility directly from the scenic Viale dell’Impero, which stretches from the Obelisk to the Fontana della Sfera. This change will improve accessibility and make the arrival experience even more immersive.

Additionally, the Fan Village will undergo a complete renovation, offering visitors more entertainment, dining, and engagement opportunities. With an increase in available space from 12 hectares to 20 hectares, the tournament grounds will provide a more comfortable and dynamic atmosphere for fans attending the event.

The Economic and Cultural Impact

The president of the Italian Tennis Federation, Angelo Binaghi, emphasized the significance of this expansion, highlighting its necessity due to the tournament’s rapid growth.

“Today, we present the first major announcement regarding the tournament. We are unveiling the largest site expansion in the history of the Internazionali BNL d’Italia. Over the past decade, attendance has more than doubled, and our projections indicate further growth in the coming years. This expansion not only enhances the event itself but also contributes to the economic impact on the region,” Binaghi stated.

The upcoming changes at the Foro Italico represent a new era for the Italian Open. With a greater capacity, improved infrastructure, and a world-class fan experience, the tournament is solidifying its place as one of the premier stops on the tennis calendar. As Rome prepares to welcome Jannik Sinner and the world’s top players, the excitement for the 2025 edition is already building, promising an unforgettable event for tennis enthusiasts worldwide.
