ATP 250 Adelaide 1/8-Finals
Paul – Guinard: 08.01.2025 05:00 CEST
H2H: first meeting
Tommy Paul has won three of his last five matches. The American has not played any competitive matches this season. We believe that he will give his best to go far this week to prepare accordingly for the Australian Open. Last year in Adelaide, Tommy reached the quarterfinals, losing against Jack Draper in straight sets. Shortly after, Tommy reached the third round in the Australian Open, losing in a tight match against Kecmanovic in five sets. However, shortly after that, Paul went on to win the tournament in Dallas, and just a week after, Paul finished as a runner-up in Delray Beach.
Manuel Guinard has lost three of his last five matches. Here in Adelaide, Guinard failed to qualify for the main draw tournament, losing in the final qualifying round against Hanfmann in straight sets. However, with several players withdrawing from the tournament, Guinard was a lucky loser in the main draw. The Frenchman upset Safiullin in three sets in the opening main draw round.
Best Bet to Make
According to the bookies, Paul is the big favorite in this matchup, and we agree. Guinard is a Challenger Tour-level player who has never had any success on the biggest stage. On the other hand, Paul is the first seed in Adelaide, and we expect him to go deep this week. We believe that Tommy will win his opening match of the season easily.
That being said, Paul covering the games handicap is a value bet.
Value bet/ the best odds: Tommy Paul -5.5 games handicap @1.91 @bet365
Etcheverry – Kokkinakis: 08.01.2025 09:00 CEST
H2H: first meeting
Tomas Martin Etcheverry has won three of his last five matches. Last week, Tomas played in the United Cup, representing Argentina. Here in Adelaide, Etcheverry defeated Schoolkate in the opening main draw round in straight sets. The Argentine was great under pressure, saving all three breakpoints. Etcheverry is a clay court specialist who has never had any remarkable results on fast, hard courts such as this one.
Thanasi Kokkinakis has won four of his last five matches. Kokkinakis has been granted a wild card this week in Adelaide. Being an Australian, Thanasi will have the crowd on his side. Yesterday, in the opening round, Thanasi defeated Nishioka in three tight sets, as we predicted. His last competitive matches before Adelaide were at the Davis Cup, where he showed great tennis, winning against Shelton and almost upsetting Matteo Berrettini. At the end of the 2024 season, Thanasi played in Sydney at the Challenger tournament, where he won the title without dropping a single set.
Best Bet to Make
According to the bookies, Kokkinakis is the slight favorite in this match, and we agree. Kokkinakis is a way better hard-court player than Etcheverry. He will also have the crowd on his side, so we expect him to win against Etcheverry easily.
That being said, Kokkinakis winning is a value bet.
