Novak Djokovic Reveals Reasons for Hiring Andy Murray as his new coach

The tennis world was left stunned when Novak Djokovic announced Andy Murray as his new coach for the 2025 Australian Open. This decision marked an unexpected twist in the careers of both players. Murray, who retired from professional tennis just a few months ago, is set to embark on his first coaching role alongside his former rival. During an interview at the Qatar Grand Prix, Djokovic revealed the rationale behind this collaboration, shedding light on the thought process that led to this surprising move.

News of the partnership has generated buzz across the tennis community as the two iconic players prepare to work together. Djokovic explained that his search for a coach centered on finding someone who could offer insights into his challenges as a player still competing at the highest level. With his wealth of experience as a multiple Grand Slam champion and former World No. 1, Murray seemed an ideal choice.

In reflecting on the decision, Djokovic shared, “I was going through a process of thinking about next season and trying to figure out what I need at this stage of my career.” This introspection came after his split with long-time coach Goran Ivanisevic earlier in the year, a partnership that had yielded considerable success.

“I took about six months to really think about if I really need a coach, and if yes, who that’s going to be and the profile of the coach,” Djokovic continued. While exploring potential candidates, Murray’s name surfaced during discussions with his team.

The choice to approach Murray was not only unconventional but also surprising to both parties. “It caught him a little bit off guard as well because he wasn’t expecting it,” Djokovic admitted. Nevertheless, Murray quickly warmed to the idea and agreed after a few days of consideration.

Djokovic expressed his excitement about the collaboration, emphasizing its significance for tennis. “He’s been one of my greatest rivals. We’re the same age. We’ve played in all the biggest stadiums in our sport. So I can’t wait to get out on the court and prepare for next season,” he said.

This partnership signals a pivotal moment for Djokovic, whose focus has increasingly shifted to excelling at Grand Slam tournaments and representing Serbia. With his appetite for competing in regular ATP events waning, Murray’s presence could reignite the Serb’s motivation. The Scot’s perspective as a recent retiree may serve as a reminder for Djokovic to cherish the time he has left in the sport.

Andy Murray’s presence on Novak Djokovic’s coaching team also rekindles memories of one of tennis’s great rivalries. Between 2006 and 2017. Their 36-match history includes memorable encounters, with Djokovic leading the head-to-head record 25–11. Notably, the pair are the only two male duos to have contested finals in all four Grand Slam tournaments.
