Three quarterfinal matches are scheduled for Friday at the ATP Moselle Open in Metz. Corentin Moutet is already into the semifinal after Andrey Rublev withdrew from the tournament with an abdominal injury. Young American Alex Michelsen, who won an epic battle in the last round against Richard Gasquet, who is retiring next year, is one of those who will take to the court. As always, we at LWOT give our predictions and analysis for all the matches, but which players do you think will join Moutet in the semifinals?
ATP Metz Quarterfinal Predictions
Cameron Norrie vs Zizou Bergs
Head-to-head: First meeting
2024 has been a challenging year for Cameron Norrie. A combination of form and injury issues has led to him slipping down the rankings. The Briton ensured he would end his rough season with at least two victories in the previous rounds. Bergs’ opening two victories in Metz were more comfortable than Norrie’s. Despite getting a few wins, Norrie was still far below his best, and Bergs’ powerful brand of tennis might be too much for him to handle.
Prediction: Bergs in 2
Quentin Halys vs Benjamin Bonzi
Head-to-head: Halys 3-1 Bonzi
Halys dominates the overall head-to-head. However, his last triumph against Bonzi was in 2021, and he lost their most recent meeting at the 2023 US Open. Bonzi’s game also suits indoor hard courts more than any other set of conditions. He showed that by upsetting the two-time French Open runner-up Casper Ruud in the last round. Halys possesses more power, but Bonzi’s craftiness makes him the favorite in this battle of the Frenchmen.
Prediction: Bonzi in 2
Alex Michelsen vs Yunchaokete Bu
Head-to-head: Michelsen 1-0 Bu
Michelsen’s 6-7 7-6 7-6 triumph against Gasquet was a grueling battle. Fortunately for the 20-year-old, he got a day to rest between matches, which might prove crucial in this matchup. Bu does not have the same luxury after playing on Thursday, but he should be physically ready after beating Jesper De Jong in straight sets. The Chinese player has a rock-solid style that will make Michelsen work hard. This could be a tight battle, but Michelsen’s greater firepower is favored to triumph.
Prediction: Michelsen in 3
