Filip Krajinovic and Shelby Rogers Announce Retirement
Filip Krajinovic has retired from professional tennis and the first round of US Open qualifiers was his last match. Krajinovic was one of the best players who never won an ATP title. He made five ATP-level finals including a Masters 1000 final in Paris. The Serb achieved a career-high ranking of #26 and pushed some outstanding players. He had four op 10 wins. Krajinovic wrote a wonderfully articulated retirement post which shows how much tennis means to him.
Shelby Rogers announced on Instagram that the US Open would be her last professional tennis tournament. Rogers always seemed to be one of the nicest and most down-to-earth players on the tour. She hasn’t won many matches in the last two years so this doesn’t come as a surprise. The American made three WTA-level finals and will go down as one of the best players of her generation to never win a Tour-level title. She pulled off so many upsets but fell so often the following round. She reached two Grand Slam quarterfinals, made it to the Top 30 in rankings and had seven wins against Top 10 players.
Belgrade to Host ATP 250 Tournament in November
The ATP announced that an ATP 250 tournament in Belgrade, Serbia will take place from 3-9 November this year. The event was previously scheduled to take place in Gijon, Spain. It will be an indoor hard-court tournament and will be held in Belgrade for an initial two-year period. The Belgrade Arena which is the main arena has a capacity of 20,000 seats. It would be interesting to see whether Novak Djokovic plays his home tournament or not, with big tournaments before and after Belgrade.
Alcaraz is the Highest Paid Tennis Player in 2024
According to the Forbes list, Carlos Alcaraz is the highest-paid tennis player of 2024. With an income of $42.3 million over the last 12 months, the Spaniard edged Novak Djokovic ($37.2 million), who came second. Alcaraz earned $10.3 million in tournament prize money and $32 million off the field.
Alcaraz can stay at the top for a long time not only because of his on-court success but also because he will be the face of tennis once Djokovic retires and is most likely to become the sport’s next “superstar.” If he is somewhat smart with his play and endorsement choices, he’ll dominate this list for the next 15 years.
