ATP Masters 1000 Cincinnati final
Sinner – Tiafoe: 20.08.2024 00:00 CEST
H2H: 3-1
Jannik Sinner has won four of his last five matches. The world number 1 was struggling with the disease earlier this month. Two weeks ago in Montreal, Jannik reached the quarterfinals where he lost against Rublev in three tight sets. The Italian was not 100% fit, and looked tired on the court. Rain interruptions forced him to play two matches in one day, so it made things more complicated for him. That being said, Jannik did not defend the title in Montreal. Here in Cincinnati, Jannik won his first match against Michelsen in two tight sets as we predicted. After that, in the 1/8-Finals, Jordan withdrew from the tournament, so Sinner proceeded to the quarterfinals, without having to play his 1/8-Final match. It was important for him to take some time off and rest for the upcoming matches. In the quarterfinals, Jannik defeated Rublev in three tight sets as we predicted. Sinner lost the first set, but stayed composed and turned the match around. Yesterday in the semifinals, Sinner defeated Zverev in a three-set thriller. The world number 1 spent over three hours on the court. He was a better player under pressure, and deservedly won in the end. Last year in Cincinnati, Jannik lost in the second round of the tournament against Dusan Lajovic.
Frances Tiafoe has won five straight matches. Two weeks ago in Montreal, Frances lost against Tabilo in the first round as we predicted. Here in Cincinnati, Tiafoe defeated Davidovich Fokina in straight sets. The first set was a roller coaster, but Frances managed to win the set after he was 1-3 down. He was trailing in the second set as well, but once again stayed calm and won in straight sets. In the second round, Tiafoe defeated Musetti in straight sets as we predicted. Frances was all over the court, and with the help of the crowd, won easily. In the 1/8-Finals, the American won against Lehecka in three tight sets, after spending almost three hours on the court. Tiafoe was 5-3 up in the deciding set, but fumbled under pressure. However, he stayed calm in the tiebreak, and won the match through the tiebreak. In the quarterfinals, Hurkacz retired after he lost the first set against the American. That being said, Tiafoe had some extra time to rest for his semifinal match against Rune. In the semifinals, Rune had now no answer to Tiafoe´s game. The American won in three tight sets and secured his final spot here in Cincinnati. Last year in Cincinnati, Tiafoe lost in the second round against Wawrinka in straight sets.
Best Bet to Make
According to the bookies, Sinner is the favorite in this matchup, and we agree with that. He is the best player in the world right now, and he is overall a better player under pressure than Tiafoe. We expect him to dominate from the very start.
That being said, Sinner winning in straight sets is a value bet.
