We are going to be treated to 32 great women’s matches on Day 1 of Wimbledon on Monday. We will see players from World #2 Coco Gauff to qualifiers ranked outside the Top 100. As always, we here at LastWordOnTennis will share our thoughts on all of the matches with you. We split the 32 matches between eight articles. Our other articles feature Emma Navarro vs Qiang Wang, Victoria Azarenka vs Sloane Stephens, Naomi Osaka vs Diane Parry, Mirra Andreeva vs Brenda Fruhvirtova, Aryna Sabalenka vs Emina Bektas, Bianca Andreescu vs Jaqueline Cristian, and Paula Badosa vs Karolina Muchova. Predicting these matches are Jordan Reynolds, Steen Kirby, and Yesh Ginsburg. Who do you think will win?
Wimbledon Day 1 Predictions
Madison Keys vs Martina Trevisan
Jordan:
Every year it feels like Keys is one of the players who could make a really deep run at Wimbledon. Could she finally go all the way at a Grand Slam? Regardless, she is almost certain to beat clay court specialist Trevisan, who will not be able to cope with her firepower.
Prediction: Keys in 2
Steen:
A semifinalist in Eastbourne with a fantastic grass court record, Madison Keys is nearing a return to the WTA Top 10. Trevisan is just 3-12 on the season at Tour level and her ranking collapsed after last season. Trevisan prefers clay; Keys should ease to a win.
Prediction: Keys in 2
Yesh:
Keys is one of the biggest hitters on Tour with one of the best all-around games. She’s going to dominate this match, and she could go far, too.
Prediction: Keys in 2
Clara Burel vs Eva Lys
Jordan:
Lys came through qualifying, including a very impressive victory against Amanda Anisimova. I think she will continue that form by upsetting Burel. The Frenchwoman has lost all three of her matches on grass so far and does not look comfortable on the surface. Lys is capable of taking advantage.
Prediction: Lys in 3
Steen:
Lys debuted in singles in 2022 on the WTA Tour–she qualified for Wimbledon to make another Grand Slam main draw appearance. Burel is sub .500 on the season and isn’t elite on grass, so Lys should continue the momentum in a close match.
Prediction: Lys in 3
Yesh:
Clara Burel once looked like a future star. The potential is still there but the game just isn’t coming together. Still, I think she’ll adjust and should be able to beat Lys here.
Prediction: Burel in 3
Karolina Pliskova vs Diana Shnaider
Jordan:
This is a fascinating matchup. 2021 Wimbledon runner-up Pliskova reached the final in Nottingham in the opening week of the grass court season, while Shnaider claimed her first WTA 500 title in Bad Homburg heading into Wimbledon. Some players do suffer a dip after such a big moment. However, I am backing Shnaider not to suffer that fate by winning this battle of the powerful hitters.
Prediction: Shnaider in 3
Steen:
The 20 year old Russian Shnaider is a dark horse for Wimbledon. She just won Bad Homburg and is 25-12 on the season at all levels. Shnaider is rising quickly and is a tough opponent for the Top 50 Pliskova. The Czech lost the Nottingham final and is 17-12 on the season. A former Wimbledon finalist, Pliskova is favored to win her opening match, but I’ll go with Shnaider in an upset in a match that could be highly competitive.
Prediction: Shnaider in 3
Yesh:
It’s stunning how far Pliskova has fallen and how fast. I just can’t believe that the game won’t come back at any moment. And yet, it’s not. Based on how they’re playing right now, Shnaider is better. That’s just where we are now.

Coco Gauff vs Caroline Dolehide
Jordan:
This is a good draw for Gauff. Dolehide is a fighter, who always brings a great attitude to the court. But she does not play her best tennis on grass, and the US Open champion should win pretty comfortably.
Prediction: Gauff in 2
Steen:
Gauff reached the semis in Berlin and is at a career high ranking after 32 match wins this year. Dolehide reached a career high ranking last year and was a quarterfinalist on grass recently. Dolehide was at her best on the ITF circuit last year and has had a respectable season but upsetting Gauff would be a shock.
Prediction: Gauff in 2
Yesh:
There’s not much to say about this match. Gauff is better, and she’ll move on. Easily.
