Adelaide International: Four ATP Players Withdraw From Event

Ugo Humbert US Open

The second week of the tennis season sees a combined ATP and WTA event at the Adelaide International. There is an exciting entry list on the ATP side for the tournament. Two-time title winner in 2023 Nicolas Jarry and last year’s Australian Open quarterfinalist Sebastian Korda are two of the players set to play at the event. However, four players have elected to withdraw from the Adelaide International. This article lists those players, and then names their replacements in the draw.

Four ATP Players Withdraw From Adelaide International

Which Players Have Withdrawn?

Ugo Humbert is the first player to withdraw from the Adelaide International. The French No. 1 triumphed in his opening match of the season in Brisbane against Alex Michelsen. However, he could not play his second-round contest against Jordan Thompson due to illness. It seems that issue has yet to fully resolve, and Humbert wants to be cautious with the Australian Open so close.

Tallon Griekspoor is the second player to withdraw from the Adelaide International. The Dutchman was in action at the United Cup, but team Netherlands fell in the group stage at the event. He had no visible physical problems at the tournament, and it is unknown why he has elected not to play in Adelaide.

Roman Safiullin has also decided to withdraw from the Adelaide International. The 26-year-old had a very solid week at the Brisbane International, reaching the semifinal before losing out to last year’s French Open quarterfinalist Holger Rune. It is likely he wants to make sure he is not too fatigued before the Australian Open.

Reilly Opelka is the last player to withdraw from the Adelaide International. It has been a very difficult time for the big-serving American due to injuries. He missed all four Grand Slams last year, but was hoping to return at the start of this season. That return date has been pushed back again.

Who Replaces Those Four Players in the Draw?

Jordan Thompson replaces Humbert at the Adelaide International. The Australian made a very good start to the season by reaching the semifinal in Brisbane, which included a quarterfinal win against Rafael Nadal. He will hope to build on that at another home tournament.

Dusan Lajovivc enters the Adelaide International draw after Griekspoor’s withdrawal. It is set to be the Serbian’s first event of the new season. He won his second title last season on the clay courts of the Banja Luka Open.

Miomir Kecmanovic benefits from Safiullin’s decision to withdraw. He dropped out of the Top 50 in 2023 after some difficult results during the season. However, he still reached two finals, including one on a hard court at the Delray Beach Open.

Finally, Yannick Hanfmann replaces Opelka at the Adelaide International. The German got an excellent first win of the season in Brisbane against Sebastian Korda, but then lost in the next round to Australian James Duckworth.
