Group B of the United Cup will pit Greece against Canada this Wednesday, Day 6 of the event, with Greece having Stefanos Tsitsipas and Maria Sakkari as Top 10 players in their ranks, while Canada has Felix Auger-Aliassime and 2021 US Open finalist Leylah Fernandez. It should be a very exciting tie, with all three matches promising some very exciting action.
United Cup Day 6 Greece vs Canada Predictions
Maria Sakkari/Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Leylah Fernandez/Felix Auger-Aliassime
Head-to-head: first meeting
This is extremely hard to predict given how unusual these teams are. However, while not particularly successful Sakkari and Tsitsipas at least have some experience playing together as a team, while Fernandez and Aliassime have only played together once, in an exho. That extra experience, coupled with the fact that they are generally higher level players individually too, should give the Greek pair the edge here on paper.
Prediction: Sakkari/Tsitsipas in 2
Maria Sakkari vs Leylah Fernandez
Head-to-head: Sakkari 2-0 Fernandez
Although Sakkari is the much higher ranked player and leads to head-to-head with two very straighforward victories, this should be a tight match. Fernandez somewhat stagnated after losing the US Open final in 2021 but she clearly has a lot of talent and seems due a breakthrough in 2024. She’s bound to have a very good year and climb up the rankings, the difference in level between her and Sakkari is nowhere near as big as the rankings suggest and this should be a very tight match that could go either way.
Prediction: Fernandez in 3
Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Steven Diez
Head-to-head: first meeting
There are some question marks regarding Tsitsipas’s fitness given how his 2023 ended, but under normal circumstances he should win this match with relative ease. He remains one of the best players on the planet, while Diez is ranked outside the top 300. It should be a complete mismatch assuming Tsitsipas is fit.
Prediction: Tsitsipas in 2
