United Cup Day 3 Predictions Including Leylah Fernandez vs Daniela Seguel

Leylah Fernandez in action ahead of the United Cup.

The United Cup continues on day 3, with Canada vs Chile one of the ties taking place. Canada are hoping to continue a recent run of successes at team events, after winning the 2022 Davis Cup and 2023 Hopman Cup. As always, we at LWOT have predictions for all three ties on day three of the United Cup, including Serbia vs China and Great Britain vs USA. But who will claim victory in this tie?

United Cup Day 3 Predictions

Steven Diez vs Nicolas Jarry

Head-to-head: first meeting

It is somewhat surprising to see #314 ranked Diez playing the men’s singles, instead of Felix Auger-Aliassime. There is no confirmed injury issue with Auger-Aliassime, and so it is unknown why he has elected not to play in the singles. It will take a major upset for Diez to defeat Nicolas Jarry. A couple of seasons ago, defeating the Chilean on a hard court may have seemed more possible. However, Jarry made huge improvements on both hard courts and grass last season, in addition to continuing his strong results on clay. Expect his powerful hitting to to be enough to claim victory here.

Prediction: Jarry in 2

Leylah Fernandez vs Daniela Seguel

Head-to-head: first meeting

It is the Chileans who are major underdogs for the women’s singles match. 31-year-old Seguel is ranked outside the Top 600, and is yet to qualify for a Grand Slam. One glimmer of hope is that she possesses a good Fed Cup record for Chile, and will hope some of that magic emerges here. Nonetheless, it would be the biggest shock of the tournament if Fernandez did not prevail in this United Cup clash. The 2021 US Open runner-up ended last season very strongly, winning a title in Hong Kong, before playing a key role in Canada’s Fed Cup triumph. She is very likely to start the new season with a victory here.

Prediction: Fernandez in 2

Leylah Fernandez/Felix Auger-Aliassime vs Daniela Seguel/Nicolas Jarry

Head-to-head: first meeting

If the previous two predictions are correct, then this United Cup tie will be decided in the doubles match. Fernandez has the most doubles pedigree of the four players, with a French Open final in doubles to her name last season. Seguel has reached one doubles final back in 2014, while Jarry made the French Open quarterfinal.

Overall, the Canadians should be too strong in this United Cup match. Fernandez’s doubles prowess, combined with the quality of Auger-Aliassime is a formidable partnership. It is difficult to see the Chilean pair having enough to combat them.

Prediction: Fernandez/Auger-Aliassime in 2
