ATP Astana Quarterfinal Predictions Including Dominic Thiem vs Sebastian Ofner

Sebastian Ofner at the French Open

It’s time for the quarterfinals of the ATP Astana Open. The line-up feels very exciting with well-established veterans like Adrian Mannarino or Dominic Thiem, along with talented youngsters like Hamad Medjedovic or Jiri Lehecka. Who do you think will make the final four?

ATP Astana Quarterfinal Predictions

Hamad Medjedovic vs Jiri Lehecka

Head-to-head: First meeting

Hamad Medjedovic used to be a bit of a clay specialist, but his weaponry it was always going to be just a matter of time. The Serbian talent is playing in his 2nd ATP quarterfinal and it’s bound to be an exciting match. Jiri Lehecka was spotless during Davis Cup and recently made an ATP Tour final in Winston-Salem. Medjedovic’s power could bother him and limit his capabilities of playing aggressive tennis with forward intent.

Predictions: Medjedovic in 3

Tallon Griekspoor vs Sebastian Korda

Head-to-head: First meeting

Sebastian Korda is definitely one of the most interesting stories of the season, from his insane peak in January to health issues and struggling to return to that peak level. He’s not quite there yet, but consecutive wins in both Zhuhai and here is a step in that direction. Tallon Griekspoor’s year has been incredible and the Dutchman isn’t slowing down. He’s a more basic serve/forehand-oriented player though and it could hurt him in this one.

Predictions: Korda in 2

Adrian Mannarino vs Jurij Rodionov

Head-to-head: Rodionov 1-0

This is a big run for Jurij Rodionov, who recently broke the top 100 but only stayed there for one week. One more win would ensure him getting back up there. It could be tricky though with Adrian Mannarino potentially playing the best tennis of his career at 35. The Frenchman has such an original style and while rather slow, the courts in Astana also have a low bounce. Mannarino’s flat shots will hurt more, even if Rodionov isn’t a player who should particularly struggle with his spins (or lack thereof).

Dominic Thiem vs Sebastian Ofner

Head-to-head: Thiem 3-0

This is the first time three Austrians are featured in an ATP Tour quarterfinal. Two of them will face each other and it’s the first non-clay meeting between Dominic Thiem and Sebastian Ofner. Indoor hard conditions can suit them both though, particularly when they’re on the slower side like at ATP Astana. Coming off that long match with Marcos Giron might end up costing Thiem if this match goes three and that’s what usually happened with these two.
