Day 2 at the WTA event in Bogota will feature a lot of rare matchups between players ranked outside the Top 100. This is surely one of the weakest fields we’ll see in a WTA event this year, which also means a great opportunity for some less fancied players to get a significant result. As always at LWOT, we also predict the rest of the day’s matches. We split them between two articles, featuring Aliona Bolsova vs Sara Sorribes Tormo and Elise Mertens vs Mirjam Bjorklund. Who do you think will advance?
WTA Bogota Day 2 Predictions
Emiliana Arango vs Harmony Tan
Head-to-head: Tan 1-0 Arango
Both players are ranked outside the Top 200, which is extremely rare to say the least for a WTA level matchup. Tan had the best moment of her career last year at Wimbledon, when she beat Serena Williams on Center Court, but she hasn’t really kicked on since. She might be able to pull through here, however, in what’s expected to be an extremely tight matchup.
Prediction: Tan in 3
Rosa Vicens Mas vs Peyton Stearns
Head-to-head: first meeting
Another matchup between two players outside the Top 100, but this one has a clear favorite in Stearns. The young rising American will surely reach the Top 100 very soon and she should be able to easily get past this first round here in Bogota.
Prediction: Stearns in 2
Despina Papamichail vs Nuria Brancaccio
Head-to-head: first meeting
This is another very tight matchup between two players looking for a rare match win at WTA level. Given the surface and current form, however, it’s fair to say Brancaccio has the slight advantage here; she has far more experience and better results playing on clay and she’s been overall playing at a higher level so far this year.
Prediction: Brancaccio in 2
Tamara Zidansek vs Reka-Luca Jani
Head-to-head: first meeting
Despite the proximity in ranking, it wasn’t that long ago that Zidansek was ranked #22 and playing in a Slam semifinal. Her ranking definitely undersells her potential and level of play. She should have little problem getting past Jani here.
Prediction: Zidansek in 2
