The WTA Tour has descended upon North America as Monterrey, Mexico, is set to host a 250-level event. This 32-woman draw is filled with some of the game’s best players and those looking to break through to the top of the tour. On Day 2, No. 3 seed Donna Vekic squares off against veteran Lesia Tsurenko. We at LWOT have the preview and prediction for that match and all other happenings around the grounds of Monterrey. But who will advance?
WTA Monterrey Day 2 Predictions
Tatjana Maria vs Lucia Bronzetti
Head-to-Head: first meeting
Veteran Tatjana Maria is looking to rebound after a couple of tough weeks. The 35-year-old German holds a 3-5 tour-level record in 2023 but does have an ITF title this season. She has an excellent chance to find her rhythm against the out-of-form Lucia Bronzetti. The 24-year-old Italian has lost five consecutive matches. Maria’s consistency will be too tough for the struggling Bronzetti.
Prediction: Maria in 3
Mayar Sherif vs Camila Osorio
Head-to-Head: Sherif 1-1 Osorio
Mayar Sherif and Camila Osorio square off looking to break their 1-1 head-to-head record. Sherif has struggled this season, holding a 2-5 record in seven matches. On the other hand, Osorio made a run to the Lyon semifinals earlier this month and took Magda Linette to three sets last week. Osorio, at age 21, is looking to have a breakout season on the WTA Tour. I see her pushing past Sherif in this one.
Prediction: Osorio in 2
Emma Navarro vs Leolia Jeanjean
Head-to-Head: first meeting
21-year-old Emma Navarro is looking to capitalize on a significant opportunity to win a WTA main draw match. The American received a wild card entry into the event and will take on Leolia Jeanjean in the first round. Jeanjean, like Navarro, has just three tour-level victories. The difference between the two is their current form. Navarro holds a 9-2 record while competing in ITF events this season. 2023 is the year she makes her breakthrough at the tour level.
Prediction: Navarro in 3
Donna Vekic vs Lesia Tsurenko
Head-to-Head: first meeting
Donna Vekic has quietly had a very strong start to the 2023 season. The 26-year-old Croatian holds a 9-2 record on the year, with her only losses coming to Maria Sakkari and Aryna Sabalenka. She is the No. 3 seed in Monterrey and will take on qualifier Lesia Tsurenko in round one. Tsurenko did not drop a set in qualifying and holds a 14-4 record in all competitions this year. She has the power to trouble Vekic, but the form from the Croatian will be too tough to beat. Vekic looks like a player poised for a massive breakout this season.
Prediction: Vekic in 3
