With the top players mostly resting up for the Australian Open next week, this week in Adelaide provides a great opportunity for lower-ranked ATP players to get some points and maybe even an ATP title. For that reason alone, we’re sure to witness some very high level and intense action on this Day 2 of the event, which will feature a lot of unpredictable matches between evenly matched players. We also predict the rest of the matches in a separate article.
ATP Adelaide Day 2 Predictions
Benjamin Bonzi vs Maxime Cressy
Head-to-head: first meeting
Bonzi is just off the best week of his career, reaching a first ATP final in Pune, but at the same time he’ll be highly disappointed considering how tantalizingly close he was to actually winning his first title. It’s unlikely he can maintain the same level he displayed last week and Cressy will be surely very motivated in what was a very happy hunting ground for him last year, reaching the final and only losing to Rafael Nadal, before going on a run at the Australian Open as well.
Prediction: Cressy in 2
Soonwoo Kwon vs Tomas Machac
Head-to-head: Machac 2-1 Kwon
In a very bizarre twist of events, these two will be facing for the second time in a 30-hour span. Machac won in 3 sets in the last round of qualifying but Kwon entered the draw as a lucky loser and will have his chance for revenge here. Given that the two players are at a similar level, it’s unlikely that we will have the same winner two days in a row, so Kwon should have the edge here. When two players of similar caliber face each other twice in a short time span, wins tend to be split, as we’ve seen many times at the ATP Finals for instance.
Prediction: Kwon in 3
Albert Ramos Vinolas vs John Millman
Head-to-head: Ramos 1-1 Millman
Millman has had a tough time in recent years and will be looking to get back on track here against an opponent who’s peaking in his 30s. On paper, this should be a tight match, full of very long, grueling rallies, but maybe home advantage will be enough to swing it Millman’s way.
Prediction: Millman in 3
