There are nine matches to be played on day 2 in Hamburg. Headlining this set is young Russian star Anastasia Potapova. Potapova lifted her maiden WTA title in Istanbul earlier this year. She will undoubtedly be keen to make it two on the year here. However, the likes of Andrea Petkovic and Barbora Krejcikova will be equally determined to stop her. With that in mind, let’s take a look at who should move on from this set of four matches.
WTA Hamburg Day 2 Predictions
Misaki Doi vs Oksana Selekhmeteva
Head-to-head: First meeting
Selekhmeteva is yet to pick up a main draw win on the WTA Tour. However, the young Russian certainly looks talented and should be able to make her way inside the top 100 in the women’s game pretty soon with a little bit more luck. She may have found exactly what she was looking for here in her match against Doi. The Japanese has lost ten matches on the bounce and will be short on form and confidence heading into this one. Expect the Russian to capitalise on that and take the win here.

Rebecca Peterson vs Kateryna Baindl
Head-to-head: 1- 1
Baindl is in the main draw as a lucky loser in Hamburg. Nevertheless, the Ukrainian has some decent form to her name ahead of this match and will certainly like her chances. Peterson is arguably the better player of the two if both are at their best, but the Swede has little form to her name in recent months. Neither is a prolific clay court player so calling this match is difficult in that sense as well. I have to think someone of Peterson’s quality will come good eventually and the slightly weaker draw here in Hamburg is a great opportunity for her to do exactly that.

Andrea Petkovic vs Tamara Korpatsch
Head-to-head: First meeting
Petkovic is the better player of these two by quite some margin both historically and in recent months. A poor grass court swing means she isn’t in the best of form at the moment, but she is still a regular in the top 100. The same cannot be said of Korpatsch, who is still yet to finish any year inside the top 100 in the women’s game. Korpatsch is a good clay court player which makes this match a little bit more interesting. However, I still expect Petkovic to win fairly comfortably in the end.
Prediction: Petkovic in 2
Anastasia Potapova vs Varvara Gracheva
Head-to-head: 1 – 0 Potapova
Somewhat surprisingly, Gracheva is still the higher ranked of these two players. However, that is more a reflection on Potapova’s struggle to come back from several injuries than it is their actual quality as players. Potapova is in a rich vein of form and will be full of confidence after lifting her first WTA title at the end of April. If she can continue to improve as she has done in recent months, she should be well inside the top 50 by the end of the year. For a young player with her talent that is a more fitting reflection than her current ranking of #79. Gracheva is still no slouch though, and I expect this to be a well fought contest with Potapova edging it out in the end.
