Wimbledon Day 8 Women’s Predictions Including Paula Badosa vs Simona Halep

Elena Rybakina at Wimbledon.

With four intriguing fourth-round matches on the schedule and a place in the Wimbledon quarterfinals at stake, it should be an entertaining day eight at the All England Club. As always, we here at LWOT will be offering our predictions for ever match. But who will book their place in the last eight?

Wimbledon Day 8 Predictions

Amanda Anisimova vs Harmony Tan

Jim: Is Amanda Anisimova set for another deep run at a Major? She has had to battle hard so far at Wimbledon, but she has been playing well enough to suggest that she probably is. Harmony Tan, meanwhile, is having the tournament of her life at Wimbledon, with her first-round victory over Serena Williams probably the match of the tournament so far. But as well as she has played, she remains somewhat limited and those limitations may well be exposed by Anisimova.

Prediction: Anisimova in 3

Yesh: This is just an amazing run from Anisimova. She’s showing off her grass prowess and putting everything together. It’s been a rough few years for her since her father’s passing, but the young American is finally performing at the elite level we’ve been expecting since she first appeared on the stage as a teenager.

Prediction: Anisimova in 2

Jakub: Tan already had the biggest moment of her career when she took out the returning Serena Williams in the opener but it has turned into the tournament of her career. The Frenchwoman blew Katie Boulter away in less than an hour in the last round. Anisimova looked very strong against Coco Gauff and if she brings the level again, expect her to end Tan’s fairytale run.

Paula Badosa vs Simona Halep

Jim: This match could go either way. Neither Paula Badosa nor Simona Halep has dropped a set so far at Wimbledon, so something will have to give. Badosa has perhaps been playing the better tennis though, particularly in her 7-6 7-5 win over Petra Kvitova. She also has more tennis behind her in 2022. Expect a close contest, but for Badosa to have just about enough to reach the quarterfinals.

Prediction: Badosa in 3

Yesh: Badosa is a fine player, consistent and capable of outhitting top players on her day. But Halep, the champion at Wimbledon in 2019, is finally healthy, match ready, and bringing all her grass-court talent to the fore.

Prediction: Halep in 2

Jakub: Badosa played one of the highest-quality matches of the tournament against Petra Kvitova in the last round, taking out the two-time champion in two tight sets. Before then, the Spaniard was cruising similarly to Halep, who was only really pushed in the first set by Kirsten Flipkens. The Romanian dominated when the two met earlier this season at Madrid but with her ground strokes, I see Badosa as the favorite on grass.

Alize Cornet vs Ajla Tomljanovic

Jim: A big opportunity for both. But Ajla Tomljanovic may be better placed to take it. The Australian, who was excellent in her three-set win over Barbora Krejcikova in the third round, is better suited to playing on the grass than Alize Cornet, which she demonstrated by reaching the quarterfinals at Wimbledon last year. Expect her to seal a return to the last eight here.

Prediction: Tomljanovic in 3

Yesh: Cornet is in the best form of her career, on her favourite surface, and coming off the biggest win of her career. There’s no limit to how far she can go right now.

Prediction: Cornet in 2

Jakub: Cornet pulled off an incredible upset, taking out top seed Iga Swiatek in straight sets and ending her 37-match win streak. Tomljanovic had a smaller upset of her own, defeating Barbora Krejcikova in three sets. The two have split in their four previous meetings but it was Tomljanovic who came out on top in their second-round Wimbledon match last year. It is pretty much a coin flip for me, Cornet lives for the big moments but does not always follow upsets up so I’m leaning towards the Australian here.

Elena Rybakina vs Petra Martic

Jim: When she is on song, Elena Rybakina is a force to be reckoned with. Grass does not always favour the big hitters, but she has looked sharp at Wimbledon so far this year, scoring wins over Coco Vandeweghe, Bianca Andreescu and Zheng Qinwen, all without dropping a set. If she can maintain that level, she should have the beating of Petra Martic.

Prediction: Rybakina in 2

Yesh: Both Rybakina and Martic are in really good form, and both of them are enjoying the grass here. The Kazakh has more experience and talent on the surface, though. That should be the difference.

Prediction: Rybakina in 3

Jakub: Rybakina, the only seed left in her quarter, continues to get tight straight-set wins. The Kazakh beat Coco Vandeweghe, Bianca Andreescu, and now Zheng Qinwen. Martic is also yet to drop a set, most recently upsetting Jessica Pegula. I can see the Croat causing Rybakina some trouble with her deep slice and will be a different challenge.

Prediction: Martic in 3
