Benoit Paire has really struggled this year. The Frenchman is yet to win a match since the Australian Open, and is currently on a five-match losing streak. Though this will be Koepfer’s first match back since the Australian Open, the German should come through based on Paire’s current form.

Steve Johnson vs Daniel Altmaier

The American Steve Johnson has had a consistent start to his 2022 season. The current World No. 115 has consistently beaten players in the top 100 and has been knocking on the door to re-enter the top 100. It will be a good opportunity for him here at Indian Wells. Expect a great match between the pair, as Altmaier is playing some of the best tennis of his career, with a career high ranking of #79.

Richard Gasquet vs Oscar Otte

Gasquet has historically performed well at the Indian Wells. The Frenchman has only lost once in the first round in eleven appearances. He will has a tough match against him, as Otte, like Altmaier, is playing some of the best tennis of his career. Expect a close match, but the Frenchman’s experience should pull him through to the next round.

Adrian Mannarino vs Brandon Nakashima

The pair played against each other last month in Delray Beach where the Frenchman won in three tight sets (7-5 in the third). The conditions will be completely different here in California, and that could play in Nakashima’s favor. Expect a similar close result, but perhaps the American getting his revenge here in the desert.
