The seeds in the men’s draw continue to struggle as we head into Day 5 of the 2021 US Open. Of the 32 that started we have already lost 15 at the time of writing. That’s quite the handful considering there are still second round matches to play as I write this. However, the top six seeds – from which most believe this years champion will emerge – are still alive and playing well. One of that group of six faces a real test on Friday. As such, they’ve earned the honour of featuring in the US Open day five men’s match of the day.
Day 5 Men’s Match Of The Day – Andrey Rublev vs Frances Tiafoe
This match should be a feast of fantastic forehands. Both Andrey Rublev and Frances Tiafoe generate immense power off that wing and rarely pull back on their shots. Rublev’s approach more often than not is to hit the cover off any ball put in front of him. On these lightning quick New York courts that approach will pay dividends. He has a vastly improved serve this year and it has become a real weapon for the Russian. Similarly, Tiafoe shares a thunderous forehand and impressive serve, they just don’t have quite as much punch as Rublev’s do. That doesn’t mean this match will be one-sided though.
Tiafoe has more versatility to his game and is willing to change things up if his smash everything approach is failing. He has great feel and is comfortable coming into the net, something that can’t be said for the Russian. Tiafoe also has the advantage of having the home crowd on his side which can be a big factor in a place where the crowd is as rowdy as New York. Rublev is well on his way to establishing himself as one of the best in the men’s game. However, if he is to truly earn the right to be considered one of the elite players on the tour he must improve upon his quarterfinal best in Grand Slams.
Match On Rublev’s Racket
The Russian is undoubtedly the better player of the two and has enough in his locker to get past Tiafoe. However, it won’t be straightforward and it definitely won’t be boring to watch. These two hit winners galore and are no strangers to making ridiculous shots look easy. If you’re after fireworks on the tennis court then look no further than this third round clash between to great players in great form. This is a match truly deserving of the title of the US Open day 5 men’s match of the day.
