Daniel Evans vs Lucas Pouille
Head-to-head: Evans 1-0 Pouille
Evans is not having the best of seasons, but Pouille’s has been an absolute disaster, much like his countryman Simon’s. He has only won three matches all season, though he’ll surely take some confidence after going through qualifying here (with great difficulty). Evans should still have a clear edge.
Prediction: Evans in 2
Marcos Giron vs Federico Delbonis
Head-to-head: Delbonis 1-0 Giron
Delbonis might have won when the pair faced earlier this year in Rome, but that was on clay. On hard court it should be a very different story, with Delbonis struggling massively on the surface–in fact he’s yet to win a match on hard courts this year–and Giron getting some very creditable results recently. The American should be able to come through here.
Prediction: Giron in 2
Jordan Thompson vs Max Purcell
Head-to-head: Thompson 2-0 Purcell
Purcell has entered this tournament as a lucky loser and hasn’t been having good results lately; Thompson hasn’t exactly been in great form lately either, but he’s the overall better and more experienced player and should prevail here.
Prediction: Thompson in 2
Benoit Paire vs Gilles Simon
Head-to-head: Simon 6-3 Paire
Simon’s first round win at Winston-Salem was only his third victory of the year, with his current record being a dreadful 3-14. It looks like the 36 year old’s time as a top level ATP player is over, but someone with his quality and experience can always have a strong week out of nowhere. Paire, on the other hand, has found some form lately and reached the quarterfinals at Cincinnati last week, but he’s also one of the most inconsistent players around, so this one is far from a given.
Prediction: Paire in 3
