The first four of eight quarterfinalists at the French Open all have varying levels of past success at the tournament. Stefanos Tsitsipas was a semifinalist in 2020, while Daniil Medvedev, Alexander Zverev and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina are all first time quarterfinalists in Paris. Alexander Zverev vs Alejandro Davidovich Fokina
Yesh Ginsburg: Alexander Zverev keeps on playing poorly but winning match after match. He’s been gifted with a draw that lets him move on to the semifinals, too. Alejandro Davidovich Fokina is talented and has a real future, but he has spent a ton of time and court and has never played under this much pressure before. It will cause problems. Zverev in 4
Damian Kust: Zverev’s draw turned out to be really kind after all, even if his first-round performance was far from convincing. Davidovich Fokina has already lost five sets in this tournament, and while he’s playing exceptionally well, he’s also getting more and more tired. Zverev’s physicality is amazing and from just that standpoint, he should be able to outplay most of his opponents. Including Davidovich Fokina. Zverev in 4
Daniil Medvedev vs Stefanos Tsitsipas
Yesh: Out of absolutely nowhere, Daniil Medvedev looks like a clay-court monster. (At least, he is on this dry French Open clay.) With his style and the level he’s playing at this week, there’s not much that Tsitsipas can do to hurt him. Shocking as that last sentence was to write, it’s absolutely true. Medvedev in 3
Damian: The head-to-head record might be worrying for Tsitsipas, but in theory, this matchup should be a lot easier on clay. Medvedev won their only match on this surface though and all of a sudden, he’s looking amazing on the dirt. The warm, sunny conditions really suit him and as this is likely the night match on Tuesday, this could give the advantage to the Greek, especially as Medvedev’s serve will hurt him less.
