The WTA Lyon event has reached its climax. Two women are left standing, with one match left to play to determine who lifts the trophy. Few would have picked Clara Tauson and Viktorija Golubic to be the two in contention at the start of the week. Nonetheless, they’ve made it. Both will surely leave it all out on the court tomorrow in a bid to lift the trophy. Tauson makes her debut in a WTA final while Golubic will be looking to add a second trophy to her Gstaad win 2016. Who will come out top? We do our best to call the outcome of tomorrow’s matchup in our WTA Lyon final prediction.

Viktorija Golubic vs Clara Tauson
Head-to-head: Golubic 1-1 Tauson
Somewhat surprising, these two qualifiers for WTA Lyon have met twice in the last 12 months. Golubic was the victor last year, with Tauson coming out on top in January of 2021. Based off of the tennis the two have played this week Tauson is the clear favourite. The Danish phenom has dropped exactly zero sets this week on her way to the finals. Her run includes wins over three top 100 players, the first of which knocked out #1 seed Ekaterina Alexandrova. She had questions asked of her in her semifinal matchup against Badosa Gibert, but always came up with an answer. Tauson has immense power off both wings and a strong first serve. If she finds her range again tomorrow she will be a very tough out. However, Golubic has made it this far this week by hanging on and refusing to go away.
The Swiss survived a gruelling first round scare against Lapko earlier in the week. Fittingly, she made the finals in similarly uncomfortable fashion, twice pulling back a break in the third to stop Ferro running away with the match. Golubic certainly benefited from Ferro’s game falling off a cliff after a good first set. However, she did well to keep herself in the match long enough for Ferro’s second wind to subside. Golubic has a powerful backhand that is a dangerous weapon on these indoor courts. If she deploys it to good effect tomorrow she could well make a match of this.
On paper this should be close, with less than 20 ranking spots separating the two at the start of this tournament. In practice, however, Tauson has been a cut above the rest this week. Barring a complete disappearance of the immense game she has demonstrated this week she will win this and do so comfortably. Ferro was the only player remaining with a real shot at stopping the Danish wrecking ball and she is out of the tournament. Golubic will do well to make this competitive, but she won’t do more than that.
