Day 4 of the ATP Marseille Open 2020 sees the quarterfinal bracket being completed. Top seed Daniil Medvedev is in action and so is third seed David Goffin. It will be an exciting day of tennis and we bring predictions for all five Round Of 16 matches scheduled.
ATP Marseille Open Day 4 Predictions
Gilles Simon vs Aljaz Bedene
Head to head – Bedene 3-0 Simon
Aljaz Bedene certainly is taking up the fight to the top players and is doing so magnificently. He did it in Rotterdam beating Stefanos Tsitsipas and backed it up by beating Karen Khachanov in his opening match. His next opponent is not as powerful as the Russian but is definitely more consistent. Gilles Simon had a solid first-round match which makes this match a good contest to be.
Bedene has beaten Simon in all three of their previous occasions, two of them being on indoor hard courts. While Bedene did commit seven double faults, he didn’t hold back on his first serve firing 18 aces. All in all, Bedene looks confident enough to aggressively wrestle control of this match and keep his perfect head to head record intact.
Prediction: Bedene in 2
Marin Cilic vs Denis Shapovalov
Head to head – Cilic 1-1 Shapovalov
Both their previous meetings have been pretty one-sided with identical scorelines reading 6-4 6-2. Marin Cilic looked rusty against qualifier Ilya Ivashka and will have to shake it off if he’s to beat Denis Shapovalov.
Luckily for the Croat, Shapovalov hasn’t won a match since Melbourne and is no doubt underconfident. This match might turn into an ugly slugfest over three sets. Neither player enters this match as the favorite but on fast indoor courts, Cilic is still quite potent from the baseline. If the Croat can build up momentum and serve well, this match might sway towards Cilic. Expect a fighting match with Cilic clinching it.
Prediction: Cilic in 3
Pierre-Hugues Herbert vs Felix Auger-Aliassime
Head to head – Herbert 1-0 Auger-Aliassime
Felix Auger-Aliassime didn’t get the fast start he would’ve hoped for in Marseille having to fend off match points to earn the win. The Canadian gets no respite when he faces Pierre-Hugues Herbert who recently beat him in Montpellier. It was a tight two setter which provides Herbert with a slight mental edge entering this match.
The Frenchman was at his clinical best serving 17 aces and managing to hold his serve every single time. If he can repeat that performance in front of his home crowd once again, this match becomes a mighty tough one to call. Felix would no doubt be happy to get through but he would’ve to fight till the very end in this match because Herbert looks confident in his shot-making. Expect a close contest with the Canadian learning from his previous meeting with Herbert and nabbing the win.
Prediction: Auger-Aliassime in 3
David Goffin vs Egor Gerasimov
Head to head – First Meeting
It’ll be a good opening test for David Goffin who opens up his Marseille Open campaign against qualifier Egor Gerasimov. The Belarusian played a solid match against Dennis Novak but David Goffin is a top ten player and a level above.
The Belgian is extremely consistent and while he didn’t have a good Rotterdam campaign, expect Goffin to play his best and easily fend off Gerasimov.
Prediction: Goffin in 2
Daniil Medvedev vs Jannik Sinner
Head to head – First Meeting
If Daniil Medvedev thought he’d be having an easy Round of 16 encounter as the top seed, he’d be very wrong. Jannik Sinner is definitely one of the players to look out for and the Italian will be relishing the challenge of facing Daniil Medvedev.
The Russian was knocked out in his opening match in Rotterdam and wouldn’t want the same to happen here as well. That being said, Medvedev is one of the great problem solvers on the tour at the moment and he’d know exactly what is to be done to build up steam to his 2020 season. Sinner played a good match in his opener but his aggressive gameplay will be countered by the Russian. Expect Medvedev to be at his defensive best and move into the quarterfinals.
Prediction: Medvedev in 2
