A total of 32 players started the week in Washington, just two remain. Few would have predicted that the final would be contested between Camila Giorgi and Jessica Pegula, but both women have more than earned their spots in the title-match. The question now is: who will claim the title?
WTA Washington Open Final Prediction
Camila Giorgi vs Jessica Pegula
Head-to-head: Pegula 2-1 Giorgi
Giorgi will be seeking her first title of the year and the third of her career. The Italian has struggled for the majority of 2019 and came into this week with a 3-8 record this year before Washington and no singles wins since earlier this year at the Australian Open in January. For Pegula, this will be her first final on home soil and a second chance to win her maiden singles title after losing in Quebec last year. Unlike, Giorgi, the American has had a steady and consistent season, having gone a steady 19-13 so far on tour this year.
Both players have made straightforward progress to the final. The Italian has only been troubled by Rebecca Peterson in the second round, as she had to rally after dropping the first set to win in three. Pegula dropped sets to both Iga Swiatek and her semifinal opponent Anna Kalinskaya, but managed to dig out the win.
Even though their head-to-head suggests Pegula comes in with a slight advantage, their last meeting was way back in 2012 and a lot has changed for both players. Expect a close encounter as both players are in good form. Even though the crowd will be rooting for the American, it is tough to go against Giorgi. The Italian has already had the experience of winning titles and will know what it takes to win a final. If Giorgi can take advantage of Pegula’s early nerves and get a good start, it could prove decisive.
Prediction: Giorgi in 3
