The Swiss Open 2019 has been a fascinating affair but rain played spoilsport at Gstaad on quarterfinals day. Three out of the four matches were completed as the fourth was rescheduled for Saturday. Thomas Fabbiano and Cedrik Marcel Stebe will have to wait another day to find out who goes through to the last four and unfortunately play two matches in one day.
It wasn’t a good day for top seeds as Bautista Agut, Lajovic and Carballes Baena all saw their campaigns come to a halt. Meanwhile, one of the semi-finals are set and it’s an all Spanish clash between Pablo Andujar and Albert Ramos Vinolas. We analyze and predict who’s going to contest for the coveted trophy.
Swiss Open Semifinal: Pablo Andujar vs Albert Ramos Vinolas
Head to head – Andujar 6-1 Ramos Vinolas
A Spaniard is set to contest for the trophy as Pablo Andujar takes on Albert Ramos Vinolas. Andujar came through a tough matchup against an in form Dusan Lajovic with relative ease, dropping his serve only once. The older Spaniard is a solid baseliner and is finding his way once again post several surgeries. A natural clay courter, he has beaten Ramos Vinolas six times but the last of those came back in 2015.
Ramos Vinolas is enjoying a solid outing here after a decent semifinal run at Bastad. He blasted his way through Roberto Carballes Baena, breaking his serve four times. Coming to this matchup, the match could be decided by how well Andujar stays away from Ramos Vinolas’s forehand and closes points out at the net.
Both players have had a great week so far but Ramos Vinolas’s wins have been more convincing. Andujar’s run here would surely do him a world of good but it looks likely to end at the hand of his compatriot, who has looked so composed and assured throughout the tournament. Expect this match to go the distance with the younger Spaniard just clinching it.
Prediction: Ramos Vinolas in 3
