Despite the Wimbledon Championships ending on Sunday, the tennis never truly stops as the players make a quick return to the slower clay courts between the grass swing and the US summer hard-court swing. The destination is Umag, where we have a packed slate of matches for you on Day 2, one which, as always, we here at LWOT will predict. But who do you think will reach the next round?
ATP Umag Day 2 Predictions
Federico Agustin Gomez vs Niels McDonald
Head-to-head: First meeting
Both of these players do their best work on slower clay courts, with Federico Agustin Gomez using his big forehand and serve combination effectively, while Niels McDonald famously won the 2025 Boys’ French Open. Although Gomez has already gained experience on these courts by coming through qualifying, I think McDonald’s higher ceiling and greater consistency from the back of the court will prove to be the difference.
Prediction: McDonald in 3
Marko Topo vs Camilo Ugo Carabelli
Head-to-head: First meeting
Marko Topo did well to reach the main draw after coming through qualifying, where he implemented his aggressive game and big serve to great effect. But against Camilo Ugo Carabelli, this will be a significant step up in competition. The Argentine is a traditional clay-courter who thrives on grinding out points, and if he brings that level into this match, he should come away with the victory.
Prediction: Ugo Carabelli in 2
Alex Molcan vs Valentin Royer
Head-to-head: First meeting
Valentin Royer is a player who relies on flat ball striking and serving well out of difficult situations, paths to success that are not as readily available on clay. Alex Molcan, on the other hand, will look to use his left-handed angles and remain consistent from the baseline with his speed and heavy topspin. While that style can allow Royer to find his rhythm at times, I think Molcan’s strengths on slower clay should give him the advantage in this matchup.
Prediction: Molcan in 2
Pablo Carreno Busta vs Matej Dodig
Head-to-head: First meeting
With very little experience on the ATP Tour, 20-year-old Matej Dodig received a wildcard into the main draw of his home tournament. While he will be facing a player who is well past his prime, Pablo Carreno Busta’s baseline game should still prove a difficult challenge for the Croatian. Expect the Spaniard to dictate the tempo of the match and reach the second round in Umag.
Prediction: Carreno Busta in 2
